IPL 2024 Teams Preview: Strategies, captaincy updates, players' stats and more
Chennai Super Kings will start the title defence at their home in Chepauk, on Saturday, March 22.
3. Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians - a team of dreams, a team of champions, would be gunning to lift their sixth championship in history. With that in mind, Mumbai have made certain changes to its squad and are mostly focusing on the next decade. Bringing Hardik Pandya back into the mix is one such step that the franchise has taken as they also have the likes of Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera and Ishan Kishan, who would play a vital role in shaping the franchise.
Despite all the changes, Mumbai have managed to build a squad that can challenge for the title in 2024. However, is everything well in MI at the moment? Well, it is believed that former skipper Rohit Sharma wasn’t communicated well before being removed as skipper while the senior players like Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah didn’t enjoy the move as they hoped that the baton would come to them.
However, in the practice sessions, Rohit seemed to have enjoyed Hardik’s company as the duo was spotted hugging each other. Both these players will be vital for the squad for the upcoming season as it has been four years since Mumbai last held the trophy. The focus will also be on youngster Ishan Kishan, who hasn’t played a lot of cricket since November and recently has been axed out from BCCI’s annual contract.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar is ruled out of the first couple of matches in the tournament, and either of Wadhera or Dewald Brevis is likely to replace him. Tim David and Mohammad Nabi will bring power to the table, while Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace department. He will have Gerald Coetzee by his side, who is in remarkable form. However, it’s the spin department that looks a bit weak on paper. Piyush Chawla and Shams Mulani are good options to have, but is that enough?
