WPL 2024: 3 players who couldn't justify their auction price tags in tournament

The second edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL 2024) delivered nearly a month of exciting action from players across the globe. A new set of champions emerged in the tournament as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clinched their maiden title after a 16-year quest. While Delhi Capitals (DC) failed twice to complete the final hurdle, defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) had to end their journey in the Eliminator.

Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry, captain Smriti Mandhana and young spinner Shreyanka Patil were the leading forces behind RCB’s triumphant outing. UP Warriorz (UPW) endured a tough season, but Deepti Sharma bagged the Player of the Tournament for her all-round brilliance. While many such players fulfilled the expectations of their franchises at the marquee event, there are a few who fetched huge sums in the WPL 2024 auction but failed to justify their price tag.

3. Annabel Sutherland (Delhi Capitals)

DC signed Annabel Sutherland for a record sum of Rs 2 crore, making her the joint-most expensive player in WPL 2024. Her impressive stint with the Australian team and Melbourne Stars in the 2023 WBBL attracted multiple franchises in the bidding. But whether DC managed to get the best out of her is a question.

With only four overseas slots available, Sutherland had tough competition to get into the mix. However, in the four opportunities she got, the all-rounder managed to score just 18 runs and take just one wicket. On the other hand, her competitor Jess Jonassen performed well and had a consistent run throughout the tournament.
