3 Bangladesh players who retired young
A few cricketers decided to devote their time to their families due to personal reasons. Also, some players found their forte in coaching roles and others looked for administrative roles
The early part of this century witnessed Bangladesh making a mark in international cricket. However, the side could not be consistent enough across all three formats, resulting in a rather dismal state of affairs in their cricket. Things reached a tipping point when many prominent players offered to retire from all forms of cricket to participate in the defunct Indian Cricket League.
Apart from them, a few cricketers decided to devote their time to their families due to personal reasons. Also, some players found their forte in coaching roles and others looked for administrative roles. Here are three notable players, who bid farewell to their playing career at a young age.
1. Aftab Ahmed
Aftab Ahmed made his ODI and Test debut in 2004. Later in the same year, the right-hander delivered an impressive knock of 67 against India, which helped him to cement a place in the national side. In the following year, he returned with knocks of 81* and 51 against Zimbabwe and England to further progress well in his career.
The 2006-07 period was certainly a golden one for him, as he remained consistent against every team and led the team from the front. However, in mid-2008, the talented batter decided to take early retirement to feature in the ICL. Due to this involvement, his career was put on hold by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
Aftab returned to play for the national team in 2010 and contributed 50 runs in two ODIs against England. He also featured in a one-off Test match against New Zealand and England. He decided to retire from all forms of cricket after the 2014/15 domestic season, as he shifted focus to coaching at an age of 29.
