Australia became the most successful team in the history of the World Cup after defending the title successfully under Ricky Ponting in the World Cup 2003, jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya. Throughout the competition, Ponting and Co. played a fierce brand of cricket and clinched the trophy for the third time winning 11 games on the trot.

India, who looked impressive under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership, qualified for the final after winning nine consecutive contests. In the final at the New Wanderers Stadium, India skipper Ganguly won the toss and invited the Aussies to bat first. Ganguly’s decision backfired as the Men in Yellow amassed 359 runs on the board.

Ponting hit an unbeaten knock of 140 (121) and led his side from the front on the crucial day. Following the huge target of 360 runs, India were bowled out on 234. Glenn McGrath spearheaded Australia’s pace attack confidently, grabbing three wickets which included the prized scalp of Sachin Tendulkar as well.
