Ahead of this year’s Asia Cup, Shakib Al Hasan became the skipper of Bangladesh’s ODI team. Under the veteran all-rounder, expectations were high from the Bangla team but its campaign concluded in the Super Four stage as it failed to be consistent in the competition.

Bangladesh kicked off their campaign with a five-wicket loss against co-hosts Sri Lanka in Kandy. Following that defeat, they made a solid comeback against Afghanistan in Lahore. The two-time Asia Cup runners-up vanquished the Afghan team by 89 runs in the do-or-die match and Mehidy Hasan received the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten 112-run knock off 119 deliveries.

The scintillating victory pushed Bangladesh to the Super Four round but Shakib and Co. disappointed their team’s fans, getting ruled out of the competition with their losses against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In their final match, they registered a close six-run win over India and ended their tournament on a positive note.
