Match Overview

England and South Africa will lock horns in an important Group B match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on March 1 in the National Stadium, Karachi. While England are already out of semifinal contention after heavy defeats to Australia and Afghanistan, respectively. On the other hand, South Africa have everything to play for.

The Proteas, currently leading the table with three points and a Net Run Rate of 2.140, need a win to confirm their semifinal spot. If they defeat the Three Lions, they will advance, potentially even topping the group if their NRR remains higher than Australia’s. However, a loss could put their qualification at risk, depending on other results.

Australia’s match against Afghanistan will also play a crucial role with teams going ahead. If Afghanistan beats Australia, South Africa’s semifinal hopes could depend on net run rate calculations. With everything on the line, Temba Bavuma’s men will be looking to deliver a strong performance and secure their place in the final four. Meanwhile, the English team will play without any pressure. Historically, these two sides have faced each other in 70 ODIs, with South Africa winning on 34 occasions and England winning 30 times.

One exciting player battle will be between English skipper Jos Buttler and star all-rounder Marco Jansen. Buttler has struggled for consistency in the tournament, scoring 38 (vs Afghanistan) and 23 (vs Australia). Against Jansen, his record is below average with 22 runs off 36 balls, and he has been dismissed once, at the strike rate of just 61.11.

Jansen, the tall pacer, finished with spell of 1/32 against Afghanistan. His bounce could trouble Buttler, who excels on pace but has shown struggles against left-arm seamers. Jansen had a memorable outing with the bat in the 2023 ODI World Cup, hammering 75* runs and guiding his team to a huge win.
