Cricketers who retired from international cricket in 2023

The year 2023 was action-packed in international cricket as fans got to witness breathtaking cricket throughout the 12 months. The year was full of memorable moments on the pitch as several players achieved historic landmarks and helped their teams get over the line. While most players sealed their spot for the future with remarkable performances, there were a few who had their last dance on the cricket pitch. On that note, let’s take a look at the players who bid adieu to international cricket in 2023.

1. Stuart Broad

The England fast bowler announced his retirement on Day 3 of the last Test of the Ashes 2023 at the Oval in London. Stuart Broad finished his career with the second most number of wickets among seamers in international cricket with 604 scalps to his name from 167 matches at an average of 27.68 and an economy of 2.97. The 37-year-old had a fairytale ending to his career as he took the last two wickets of the game to seal a win for England.

2. Alex Hales

England opening batter Alex Hales also announced his retirement in August 2023 after last playing for his side in the final of the T20 World Cup 2022. The 34-year-old represented his nation in 11 Tests, 70 ODIs, and 75 T20Is and was a part of the T20 World Cup 2022 winning squad. Hales’ last memorable performance in international cricket came in the semi-final of the tournament as he smacked 86* (47) against India in the semi-final.

3. Sunil Narine

Former West Indies spinner Sunil Narine also called it a day on his career in the year 2023 having last played international cricket in August 2019. The 35-year-old represented his nation in six Tests, 65 ODIs and 51 T20Is picking 165 wickets across formats. Narine holds the unique record of bowling a maiden super over in T20s. Narine was a part of West Indies’ 2012 T20 World Cup winning squad and ranks among the top ten wicket-takers in IPL history.

He has also played some memorable knocks in T20 leagues and will continue to ply his trade for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL.

4. Meg Lanning

Legendary Australian women’s captain Meg Lanning also bid adieu to international cricket in November 2023. Lanning led Australia to five ICC titles including four T20 World Cups and one ODI World Cup in her nine-year-long captaincy tenure. Hence, she’s the most successful captain ever in international cricket from both men’s and women’s cricket. The Australian skipper also scored 8,352 runs from 241 matches in her international career and brought an end to her illustrious career.

5. Quinton de Kock

The South African wicketkeeper batter had announced his retirement from ODI Cricket after World Cup 2023. Quinton de Kock was seen in imperious form in his last ODI tournament as he finished as the third highest run scorer of the tournament with 594 runs from ten matches at an average of 59.40 with four hundreds to his name. De Kock retired with 6770 runs in ODIs from 155 innings at an average of 45.74 with 21 centuries to his name. The wicketkeeper will only be seen playing T20Is for his side having already retired from Tests earlier.
