India's 2011 World Cup squad members: Where are they now?

In 2011, India won the One-Day International World Cup after 28 years. Under the magnificent leadership of MS Dhoni, the Men in Blue played outstanding cricket at home and clinched the prestigious trophy. Among the dangerous sides such as Australia, South Africa, England, and Sri Lanka, India showed class and looked incredible in the tournament. Besides Dhoni’s phenomenal leadership skills, the experience of players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, and Harbhajan Singh also played a crucial role in pulling off the heist. With 482 runs in nine matches of the competition, the Master Blaster became the second-leading run-scorer in the tournament. In bowling, Zaheer Khan took 21 wickets in nine matches and became the joint-highest wicket-taker with Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi. However, it was Yuvraj Singh who became the Player of the Tournament racking up 362 runs and 15 wickets in nine games. Since then, almost 12 years have passed and the majority of players are retired and have started new innings in their life. Talking more about those champions, let’s have a look at what they’re doing currently 1. Virender Sehwag Virender Sehwag. (Photo Source: Twitter) In the 2011 World Cup, India got decent starts in the majority of games due to their devastating opener Virender Sehwag. In the inaugural game against Bangladesh, the right-handed batter smashed 175 runs off 140 deliveries at Mirpur and helped the team to post a colossal score of 370/4. With his huge contribution, the team trounced the Bangla Tigers comfortably. Later, in the games against England, South Africa, and Pakistan as well, Sehwag outsmarted bowlers and gave ideal starts to India. In the end, he amassed 380 runs in eight matches at a phenomenal strike rate of 122.58 with a ton and a half-century. In 2013, he got dropped from the national team after scoring only 27 runs in three innings of two matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2012-13. The dashing opener bid adieu to all forms of cricket in October 2015 after having a legendary 16-year career in international cricket. Post his retirement, the former Indian batter turned to commentary along with being a cricket analyst. The 44-year-old also runs a YouTube channel that has 112K subscribers. Currently, he also runs Sehwag Cricket Academy with the aim of producing quality cricketers for the nation. His distinguished academy has six branches in India. Besides, Sehwag also runs an international school where he provides quality education to students from all backgrounds. 2. Sachin Tendulkar Sachin Tendulkar. Scoring 482 runs in nine games at a strike rate of 91.98 with a couple of tons and half-centuries, he provided strength to the team. In the group stage, he notched up two centuries and showcased his brilliance against quality teams such as England and South Africa. In the knockout contests against Australia and Pakistan as well, he emboldened the team with his knocks of 53 and 85, respectively. On April 2, 2011, the greatest legend of the game lived his dream of lifting the World Cup trophy at his home ground, Wankhede Stadium, in Mumbai. In December 2012, he announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals racking up 18,426 runs in 463 matches with 49 tons and 96 half-centuries. After 24 years of international career, the Master Blaster hung his boots in November 2013, at his home ground, Wankhede Stadium, in Mumbai. His career’s last game against the West Indies also marked his 200th Test appearance. Currently, he is a mentor of five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI). Besides that, the cricketing icon also represents India Legends in the Road Safety World Series. Apart from cricket, he also likes to spend some quality time with his family and friends and also shows his culinary skills through short videos on his Instagram. Tendulkar also helps in some social causes with a prominent one being a school run in a small place in Madhya Pradesh which he dedicated to his parents. 3. Gautam Gambhir Gautam Gambhir. In India’s success in the 2011 World Cup, Gambhir was a pivotal player due to his incredible contribution. The southpaw accumulated 393 runs with four half-centuries in nine contests and became the second-leading run-scorer for India in the tournament. In the final game against Sri Lanka, he snatched the victory from the jaws of defeat with his match-winning knock of 97 runs off 122 deliveries. In December 2018, Gambhir took retirement from all forms of cricket after not getting any international games post-November 2016. At the age of 37, the left-handed batter ended international his career with 10,324 runs in 242 matches. Nowadays, he is a Member of Parliament from East Delhi constituency after defeating Atishi Marlena in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Apart from politics, he is a cricket commentator and analyst too. In the Indian Premier League, the 41-year-old is a mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and rumours are around about him leaving the role after Andy Flower departed from the IPL franchise. As of now, he is involved in the commentary panel for Asia Cup 2023. 4. Yuvraj Singh Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar. In nine matches of the marquee event, he scored 362 runs at a strike rate of 86.19, with a hundred and four half-centuries. With the ball too, he clinched 15 wickets at an economy of 5.02. During the coveted tournament, Yuvraj was suffering from cancer but didn’t lose his confidence to win the World Cup for the nation. In the group match against the West Indies in Chennai, he smashed a superb century and picked up two wickets. During the match, he was seen spitting blood while batting, but the ailment couldn’t stop him from delivering his best. In 2012, he recovered from the disease after completing the treatment. However, after having a great competition in 2011, he couldn’t feature in the national team regularly due to his fluctuating form. In June 2019, the swashbuckling cricketer ended his career as he took retirement from all forms of the game after having a 19-year-long international career. After his retirement as well, Yuvraj’s craze for the sport hasn’t ended as the World Cup-winning all-rounder featured for India Legends in the Road Safety World Series. Apart from that he has kept himself busy with taking part in leagues around the world. Besides cricket, he also runs the non-profit organisation YouWeCan to empower people to fight cancer through awareness and prevention. 5. Virat Kohli Virat kohli. Featuring in his first World Cup, Kohli hit 282 runs in nine contests with a ton and half-century. In the final match against Sri Lanka, his 83-run stand with Gautam Gambhir was crucial to oust the opponents. In the current times, Kohli is considered the best player in international cricket due to his extraordinary batting figures in all three formats of the sport. From 2017-22, he captained the Indian cricket team in all three formats and won some huge bilateral tournaments. So far, the batting icon has amassed 4.008 runs in 115 T20 International matches at a strike rate of 137.96. In One-Day Internationals (ODIs), he is the fifth-highest run-scorer of all time with 12,809 runs in 271 games. Talking about his numbers in the longest form of the game, the 34-year-old has smashed 8,119 runs in 177 innings of 104 matches. Currently, he has 74 tons in his profile which places him in the second position on the list of batters with the most centuries in the sport. Apart from cricket, he owns multiple businesses with major ones being a sophisticated restaurant and apparel brand run with the name of 'One 8'. 6. MS Dhoni (C) Ms dhoni. Under his captaincy, India succeeded in beating quality teams such as Australia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka comfortably in the knockout games and accomplished their task of holding the illustrious trophy. In the crisis situation in the final match against Sri Lanka, the skipper displayed courage as he came to bat in the number four position. Managing the situation perfectly, he played a swift knock of 91 runs off 79 deliveries to take the team home. Following his success in the tournament, Dhoni got a lot of appreciation from fans and former cricketers as well. In 2017, he passed the captaincy baton to Virat Kohli after leading the team in white-ball cricket for ten years. On the occasion of the 73rd Independence Day in 2020, he called time on his international career, as he retired from all forms of cricket. However, he is still active in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has also won a title for his franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2021. Interestingly, when speculations seemed strong for him to play the last event of his cricket career in the form of the IPL 2023 edition, he gifted his fans both the IPL title with the Chennai Super Kings in a grand style along with the announcement that he will most likely come back to play in IPL 2024 as well. Currently, he is recovering from a Knee surgery. Apart from cricket he also owns academies in Dubai and Singapore. Besides he also has an interest in agriculture and breeding high profile species of poultry in Ranchi. Besides, he has also landed in movie production whereby recently his production house under the leadership of his wife, Sakshi Dhoni, released a south film- Let's Get Married. 7. Suresh Raina Suresh Raina of India. (Photo Source: Twitter) Suresh Raina was a vital cog in India’s success in the 2011 marquee event. In the first five World Cup matches, he was not a part of the team’s playing XI. In the last group match, captain MS Dhoni included him in the team against the West Indies. However, he exuded confidence in the tournament against Australia in the quarter-final match at Ahmedabad. With his 34-run innings off just 28 balls, he played the role of a match-finisher efficiently along with Yuvraj Singh. Against the arch-rivals Pakistan in the semi-final match at Mohali, he helped India to post a competitive 260/9, with his valuable unbeaten knock of 36 runs off 39 deliveries. In July 2018, Raina featured in international cricket for the last time as he decided to wind up his international career along with MS Dhoni. Post-retirement, Raina is currently a cricket expert. Apart from that, he is also a member of the commentary panel in the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL). Moreover, Raina also plays in the T10 format in the Middle East. The talented left-arm pacer didn’t disappoint the team management as he picked 21 wickets in nine matches at an economy of 4.83. With these impressive bowling numbers, he also became the joint-leading wicket-taker in the competition along with Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi. In the massive final match triumph against Sri Lanka, Zaheer helped India to contain Sri Lanka at a score of 274/6 with his wicket-taking spell of 10-3-60-2. In October 2015, he bid adieu to international cricket after not getting a spot in the national team for more than one and a half years. Since 2018, he has been associated with the IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians, as their Director of Cricket Operations. Last year, the franchise elevated his position handing him the role of Global Head of Cricket Development. In international cricket, the former speedster is also a commentator and expert. 9. Harbhajan Singh Harbhajan Singh and MS Dhoni. In the famous World Cup victory, the off-spinner chipped in with nine scalps in nine matches at an economy of 4.48. In the important knock-out matches, Harbhajan revitalised the Indian team with his economical and wicket-taking bowling. The talented veteran played his last international game against the United Arab Emirates at Mirpur in March 2016. Currently, the 43-year-old is a commentator and has commentated in humongous cricketing events such as T20 World Cups and the Indian Premier League (IPL). Last year, he also became a Member of Parliament of the Rajya Sabha after the Aam Aadmi Party nominated his name with its four other candidates. 10. Ashish Nehra Ashish Nehra. In the tournament, he featured in three games and took three wickets at an economy of 5.07. In the group match against South Africa, he faced the heat from fans for his miserable bowling figures (8.4-0-65-0). However, the veteran played the important semi-final match against Pakistan and delivered a fine spell of (10-0-33-2) in a winning cause. In the final game at Wankhede, he couldn’t join the team’s playing XI due to a massive fracture. In 2016, he made a comeback to the national team after five years as he got a chance to play in a three-match T20I series against Australia. Later, he got selected for the T20 World Cup 2016 and appeared in all five games. In November 2017, Nehra brought down the curtain on his international career after playing his last international T20I match against New Zealand. Nowadays, he enjoys his new innings as a commentator and expert. The former pacer is also the head coach of the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). 11. Picking 11 wickets in eight matches at an economy of 5.36, Patel left an incredible impact on the tournament. In the semi-final and final matches of the competition, his economical spells steered India to a title win. In September 2011, he played his last ODI match against England and got dropped. The pacer exited the game in November 2018, with his announcement of retirement. The veteran ended his career with 125 wickets in 86 international matches. Ravichandran Ashwin Rvai Ashwin (Photo Source: Twitter) Along with Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin is the only active member of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad in international cricket. Currently, he is a regular member of the Indian Test team and has won a lot of games with his exceptional all-round talent. Last year, the selectors gave him a chance to represent India in T20 World Cup 2022 due to his vast experience. Besides cricket, he is also an active YouTuber, who discusses the sport on his channel. In the present day, he has 1.02 million subscribers on the social media site. In India’s famous triumph in the 2011 World Cup, Ashwin got two games from the team management and clinched four wickets at an economy of 4.65. Against the defending champions Australia in the huge quarter-final contest, he showcased his brilliance with the ball claiming two big wickets (Shane Watson and Ricky Ponting). Currently, he plays for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL. Now, he majorly features in Tests for India and recently also played in a TNCA division tournament. Notably, the BCCI announced the squad for the ODI World Cup 2023, where he failed to make the cut. 13. Yusuf Pathan Sachin Tendulkar, Yusuf Pathan and Harbhajan Singh. (Photo Source: Twitter) In India’s 2010-11 tour of South Africa, Yusuf Pathan showed his class in the ODI series with 166 runs in three appearances, at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 134.95. With this performance, he won the confidence of the selectors to make it to the 2011 World Cup team. In the marquee event, Pathan failed to show up as he could score only 74 runs in six matches. However, the fierce batter saved the team from defeat against Ireland, with his match-finishing innings of 30 runs off 24 deliveries. In February 2021, he took retirement from all forms of competitive cricket. Last year, he participated in the 2022 installment of the Road Safety World Series along with Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, and his brother Irfan Pathan. The former Indian cricketer also runs the Cricket Academy of Pathans with his brother Irfan Pathan. In 2014, he launched his dream venture with his brother to improve the level of cricket coaching in the country. Yusuf Pathan is currently playing in the inaugural edition of the International League T20 for Dubai Capitals and has been appointed their skipper as well. Apart from that, he also took in the inaugural editions of the ZimAfro T10 and the US Masters T10 tournament, where he showed his brute hitting force in several games. In his recent tournament played in the US, he represented the New Jersey Triton's, where he was the highest run-getter for his side. Playing the role of a finisher, he ended his US Masters' campaign with 131 runs from seven appearances. During his stint, he smacked 11 sixes and maintained a stellar strike rate of 201.53 with an unbeaten 41 being his best score in the tournament. Interestingly, he also visited the CricTracker premises, recently, to share valuable knowledge on cricket and other related activities. 14. Piyush Chawla Piyush Chawla, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. Currently, the leg-spinner is active in domestic cricket as he represents Gujarat every year in the domestic season. The veteran played his last international match in March 2011 against The Netherlands. In the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), Chawla will be seen in a Mumbai Indians (MI) jersey as the franchise picked him at the 2023 mini-auction for his base price of INR 50 lakh. The talented leggie will expect his IPL team to give him a chance in contests so that he can retain his form. Talking about Chawla’s journey in the 2011 World Cup, the team management trusted him to reinforce the bowling unit in three matches. However, he took only four wickets at an expensive economy of 6.21 and got dropped from the team after the match against the Dutch. 15. S Sreesanth Sreesanth. (Photo Source: Twitter) Before the 2011 World Cup, India’s premier bowler Praveen Kumar suffered an injury and got replaced in the squad by S Sreesanth. Kumar’s injury gave Sreesanth an opportunity to become a World Cup winner. Discussing his performance in the tournament, it could be said that the former speedster couldn’t live up to the up to expectations. In the opening World Cup game against Bangladesh, he was miserable with his disappointing bowling figures of 5-0-53-0. In Ashish Nehra’s absence, he got a chance to feature in playing XI of the final match against Sri Lanka. However, in the colossal game too, he struggled to get any wickets with the ball. In 2013, he was allegedly involved in a match-fixing scandal along with his Rajasthan Royals (RR) teammates Ajeet Chandila, and Ankeet Chavan. For his involvement in corruption, he also faced a seven-year ban. However, the ban was later lifted. In March 2022, he bid adieu to all forms of cricket as he announced his retirement on Twitter. In May 2022, he contested and lost in the Kerala Assembly election on a Bhartiya Janta Party ticket for the Thiruvananthapuram constituency. Recently, the pacer played in the US Masters T10 tournament for the Morrisville Unity team. He took nine wickets in seven innings with a decent average of 15.88, given the nature of the format. Notably, he was the third-highest wicket-taker of the event.
