IPL 2023: Top 5 batting performances from first week

The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 has begun in fabulous fashion, with sides like Punjab Kings going unbeaten in the first week. The same has not been the case for Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. With the first week of the tournament coming to a close, there were nine games that were played. Already there have been several knocks that have set the stage on fire. As the race to clinch the top four spots in the IPL 2023 points table begins to speed up, let us have a look at the top five batting performances from the first week of the IPL 2023. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Five-time champions Mumbai Indians took on the Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore in the fifth match of the ongoing T20 carnival. Mumbai, coming in to bat first, were under early pressure as their top order had crumbled early. Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Cameron Green, and Suryakumar Yadav amassed 31 runs together. However, things changed for the better when the 20-year-old batter Tilak Varma came into bat. Varma played a resilient knock, finished unbeaten at 84, and was integral for the five-time champions as they managed to post 171 runs on the board batting first. Donning new jerseys, Lucknow got off to a magnificent start to the tournament. Delhi Capitals skipper David Warner won the toss and elected to field first. Coming into bat, skipper KL Rahul’s poor form continued as he was dismissed for just eight runs. However, Kyle Mayers provided the side with just the start that they needed, as he performed magnificently with the bat. The 30-year-old took the attack to the opposition right from the get-go and scored 73 runs off just 38 deliveries to make up for his skipper’s early dismissal. Mayer’s knock propelled Lucknow to a respectable total of 193 runs, which was more than enough as they won the game by 50 runs. 3. The visitors won the toss and elected to field first, and that is where RCB’s woes began. Coming into bat, Rahmanullah Gurbaz gave the hosts a good start, scoring 57 runs. However, the rest of the top order could not make an impact in the game. Rinku Singh did score 46 runs to give the side some hope. However, it was the excellence of Shardul Thakur that came through for Kolkata. The 31-year-old amassed 68 runs off just 29 deliveries. Thakur hit nine fours and struck three sixes in the process and his knock helped Kolkata reach a total of 204 runs and ultimately win the game as well. 2. Ruturaj Gaikwad 92 runs off 50 deliveries vs Gujarat Titans Ruturaj Gaikwad. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) One of the best knocks of the IPL 2023 thus far came in the season opener of the tournament, when Chennai Super Kings faced Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 31. Four-time champions Chennai looked to notch up a big total as they were forced to bat first after losing the toss. Coming into bat, Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad looked keen to get off to a good start to their campaign. However, pressure mounted on the MS Dhoni-led side early, as Conway was sent back to the pavilion after scoring just one run. Under pressure, Chennai looked for someone to step up to the mark, and Ruturaj Gaikwad did just that. Gaikwad made a statement in the very first game of the tournament, as the opener accumulated 92 runs to his name. His knock, despite coming in a losing cause, was one of the best of the first week. In the end, Gujarat Titans comfortably chased the target and won the season opener. 1. Virat Kohli 82* runs off 49 deliveries vs Mumbai Indians Virat Kohli. (Photo Source: Twitter) In the same game where Tilak Varma set the stage on fire in the first innings, Royal Challengers Bangalore retaliated in a similar manner. Batting first, Mumbai Indians had posted 171 runs on the board thanks to Varma’s heroics. In the second innings, Faf du Plessis and ace Indian batter Virat Kohli played monumental knocks as they propelled the side to their first victory of the season. Du Plessis scored 73 runs to help Bangalore inch closer to a win, but it was the magnificent innings of Virat Kohli that helped them crossed the line. Star batter Virat Kohli played an unbeaten knock of 82 runs off just 49 deliveries as he attacked the Mumbai bowlers right from the start. The 34-year-old played in vintage Kohli fashion as his knock led Bangalore to a brilliant win.
