IPL 2024: Ranking all teams based on their death bowling ahead of the season

The IPL 2024 auction ended with 72 players being sold and history being created as ten franchises splurged over INR 250 crore in an exciting event. The auction was held for the first time outside India, as Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai served as the venue for the event. Pat Cummins (INR 20.50 Cr) and Mitchell Starc (INR 24.75 Cr) became the first players to get over 20 crore rupees from the franchises, bettering the previous highest-ever bid of INR 18.50 Cr which Sam Curran had got. Many of the uncapped players also got huge bids, setting them up for good and giving them a brilliant platform to showcase their cricketing skills. One of the foci of this IPL 2024 auction was on pacers as they were in high demand and got huge amounts in bids. In this article, we rank the franchises as per their death bowling squads from worst to best. Here is how the death bowling unit of each team is ranked after IPL 2024 auction: 10. Punjab Kings (PBKS): Sam Curran. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Punjab King's death bowling in the IPL 2024 will be heavily dependent on Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran, and newly bought Harshal Patel. Harshal made a huge name for himself as a death overs bowler in IPL 2021, where the majority of his 32 scalps came in final overs. PBKS also showed great mind to get Chris Woakes as well, who can help them at the start, leaving Shikhar Dhawan with max overs from Arshdeep and Harshal for the death. 9. Chennai Super Kings (CSK): Tushar Deshpande. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) MS Dhoni’s CSK team won the IPL 2023 despite missing a lot of their first-choice bowlers. This time, CSK got a steal deal in Mustafizur Rahman in the IPL 2024 auction, giving them a huge advantage in death overs. But still, Dhoni will have to use Tushar Deshpande, Matheesha Pathirana along Rahman in the death. This is because Mukesh Choudhary will return to take the new ball along with Shardul Thakur. 8. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG): Mark Wood. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) LSG, captained by KL Rahul, went for a lot of bowlers, but most of them are equipped for new ball bowling. Their pace attack is to be led by Mark Wood and Mohsin Khan, along with David Willey. Their death-over options will be Naveen Ul Haq, and possibly Mohsin or Wood. They do have less experienced Arshin Kulkarni and Shivam Mavi as well to support other bowlers. 7. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR): Mitchell Starc (Photo Source: Twitter) KKR spent INR 24.75 Cr for Mitchell Starc and he probably will be their best bowler at death. Andre Russell deals with injury issues and rarely bowls. Their biggest issues are Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora, their inexperienced Indian pacer attack. However, buying Chetan Sakariya has given them some hope in death over, but it remains to be seen how much he and Starc bowl in final overs. 6. Delhi Capitals (DC): Anrich Nortje. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) DC might be high on hopes of Rishabh Pant returning for IPL 2024, but death overs bowling remains their Achilles heel. With Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi dealing with injuries, they are left with Ishant Sharma, Mukesh Kumar, and Khaleel Ahmed as frontline bowlers. They have bought reinforcements in Rasik Dar and Jhye Richardson, but remains to be seen how they fare in deathovers. 5. Gujarat Titans (GT): Mohammed Shami. (Photo Source: Disney+Hotstar) Gujarat Titans’ biggest buy in IPL 2024 auction was Spencer Johnson, an unproven Australian pacer. GT made a blunder by releasing Alzarri Joseph, their fastest bowler. Now they will have India’s 2015 World Cup attack in Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Shami, and Mohit Sharma bowling in the death overs. They also have options of using Josh Little and Kartik Tyagi in death overs as well, but the lack of pace will haunt them. 4. Rajasthan Royals (RR): Trent Boult and Kuldeep Sen. (Photo Source: Twitter) Rajasthan Royals already had a potent pacer attack consisting of Navdeep Saini, Prasidh Krishna, and Trent Boult. But they made it stronger by trading in Avesh Khan from LSG and bought Nandre Burger in the auction. Though still a bit short on firepower, RR still has a lot going for them in deathovers. 3. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB): Mohammed Siraj. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) One franchise that always fell short in the pace department was RCB and in IPL 2024 auction, they rectified this. RCB went on a buying spree in pacers, gathering Alzarri Joseph, Yash Dayal, Tom Curran, and Lockie Ferguson. They, in combination with Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley, and Vijaykumar Vyshak give RCB a potent pace attack in death over for the first time. 2. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): Kavya Maran and Pat Cummins. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) SRH paid Pat Cummins INR 20.50 Cr in the IPL 2024 auction to bolster an already crazy pace attack, which is suited for death overs bowling. SRH already had two of the best death overs bowlers in Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan and had the pace of Umran Malik to go with the guile of Fazalhaq Farooqi. But Cummins, along with Jaydev Unadkat, gives them the extra edge over others in final overs. 1. Mumbai Indians (MI) Gerald Coetzee. They had Jasprit Bumrah and Jason Behrendorff along with Akash Madhwal and Arjun Tendulkar for backup. But in the IPL 2024 auction, MI added further firepower in Gerald Coetzee, Nuwan Thushara, and Dilshan Madushanka, all of whom impressed with death overs bowling in recent cricket.
