ODI World Cup 2023: Team-wise players who might not get a national call-up after the tournament

The ICC World Cup 2023 has reached its zenith with India qualifying for the final match to be played on Sunday in Ahmedabad. They had an excellent performance against New Zealand in the semi-final in Mumbai. India scored 397/4 in 50 overs and bundled Kiwis out for 327, winning the match by 70 runs. Along with the World Cup coming to a possible exciting end, the careers of a few players are also expected to come to an end, given their age and form in the tournament. There are many players across all ten participating teams, that have been around for a long time and this tournament was supposed to be their final hurrah. Also, with the teams focusing on T20 cricket after this ODI extravaganza with the T20 World Cup 2024 coming up, many players are not suited for the shortest format of the game. Some players are specifically included in their team’s squad for their speciality in the ODI format. But with the tournament coming to an end, we look at one player each from 10 teams that may not be picked in the team going forward. Here are the Team-wise players who might not get a national call-up after the Tournament: 1. Wesley Barresi – Netherlands Wesley Barresi (Photo Source: Twitter) Wesley Barresi was the only Netherlands player from the 2011 World Cup squad to return to play in the 2023 World Cup. At 39 years of age, the keeper-batter was the most senior player in all of the tournament. He played only 4 matches in the tournament, scoring 83 runs with a best of 41. Barresi has played 49 ODIs in total, making 1276 runs with one century and 8 fifties to his name. Given that the Netherlands performed very well in the tournament with younger players doing good, Barresi might not find himself in the plans going forward. 2. Angelo Mathews – Sri Lanka Angelo Mathews. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) Angelo Mathews is a bonafide legend of Sri Lankan cricket. He has an exemplary record in all formats, but in ODIs, he has 5916 runs in 226 matches with 3 centuries and 126 wickets to his name. Mathews was not originally named in the Sri Lankan squad for ICC World Cup 2023. However, he was brought in as an injury replacement and played 5 matches, scoring 51 runs and taking 6 wickets. He also became the first batter in international cricket to be dismissed timed out. But despite all his talent, Mathews is nearing 37 years of age and his fitness has always been questionable. This could prove to be the final hurrah in ODIs for Mathews and Sri Lanka might undergo a complete overhaul amidst the turmoil in the board. 3. Mahmudullah – Bangladesh Mahmudullah. (Photo Source: Twitter) Another player who was not in the original squad for the ICC World Cup 2023 was Mahmudullah of Bangladesh. It was a surprise that Bangladesh left out their best middle-order batter and their only World Cup century hitter out of the squad. But he was asked to join the squad as an injury replacement later on. He made a huge impact with 328 runs in 8 matches with one century and one fifty. Many thought that Mahmudullah should’ve been a first-choice pick to begin with. However, at 37 years of age and with a poor fitness record, the all-rounder might have played his final ODI for Bangladesh. 4. Mohammad Nabi – Afghanistan Mohammad Nabi. (Photo Source: Twitter) Afghanistan had their best outing in the ICC World Cups as they won 4 matches including wins over three former World Cup champions in Pakistan, England, and Sri Lanka. They could’ve made it into the semis, had not been for Glenn Maxwell’s whirlwind 201* in Mumbai. Their senior-most player Mohammad Nabi played a supporting role in Afghanistan’s success with 8 wickets and 55 runs. But at almost 39 years of age, Nabi is well past his prime and has already played 156 ODIs for his country, scoring 3208 runs and taking 162 wickets. This would be the perfect time for Nabi to walk away as Afghanistan would want to focus on younger players from here on. 5. Tim Southee- New Zealand Tim Southee. (Photo Source: Twitter) Tim Southee missed quite a few matches for New Zealand at the start of the World Cup 2023 as he was recovering from a broken right thumb. He played only 4 matches and picked 7 wickets in all. Once the leader of the New Zealand pacer attack, Southee has 221 ODI wickets in 161 games with a best of 7/33. However, the ICC World Cup 2023 exposed his weaknesses at almost 35 years of age. Southee barely hit the 135 kph mark and didn’t get the swing that he is famous for. He was hammered for 100 runs in the semi-final against India, becoming the first bowler to give 100-plus runs on ODIs, twice. It is time that Southee focuses on Test cricket, where he captains the Kiwis and lets the young generation take over in the white-ball formats. 6. David Warner – Australia David Warner. (Photo Source: Pankaj Nangia/Getty Images) David Warner has had an excellent ICC World Cup 2023. In 9 matches, Warner has scored almost 500 runs with 2 centuries and a best of 163 runs. At 37 years of age, this is very well the final ODI World Cup of David Warner’s career and he is aiming to make the most of it. Warner has already announced that he’ll not take a central contract if offered by Cricket Australia and he aims to play in the T20 World Cup 2024 before calling time on his career. This might very well be the final time fans are watching Warner play ODI cricket and they must enjoy the same. 7. Ben Stokes – England Ben-Stokes. (Photo Source: Twitter) It was a huge deal before the ICC World Cup 2023 that Ben Stokes had reversed his decision to retire from ODIs for this tournament and started well by hammering 180 plus in an ODI against New Zealand at home. However, when he arrived in the World Cup, he was already struggling with a knee injury and then suffered a hip issue before the tournament began. He only played 6 matches in CWC 2023, in which he failed initially, but then hit 304 runs with one century to his name as England was eliminated from the tournament with 3 wins from 9 games. Stokes will undergo a knee surgery before the India Test tour and his future in ODIs remains clouded. 8. David Miller- South Africa David Miller. (Photo Source: SAJJAD HUSSAIN/AFP via Getty Images) David Miller is a white ball legend for South Africa with 4345 runs in 169 ODIs with 5 centuries and a strike rate of 104.41. He has won many games for South Africa batting lower down the order in the ODIs and his fielding has always been top-notch. Even in the ongoing ICC World Cup, he has more than 300 runs with 2 fifties and a strike rate of 107.66. However, Miller will turn 35 in June next year and it doesn’t seem like he will be in South Africa’s plans for the next ODI World Cup at home. That also depends on his form and fitness going forward from this tournament, but the South African management will have a discussion about Miller’s future. 9. Iftikhar Ahmed- Pakistan Iftikhar Ahmed. (Photo Source: Twitter) Pakistan had come into the ICC World Cup 2023 as the no.1 ranked team and won their first two matches as well. But then they lost a bunch of matches including a first-time loss to Afghanistan in ODIs and it all came down to net run rate. But their fate was sealed already after New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka and qualified for the semis. Pakistan’s tournament was a failure from top to bottom and one reason was the failure of lower-order batters to propel the team to a big score. One such failure was Iftikhar Ahmed, who made 142 runs in 9 games at a strike rate of 115.44. He was one player who could’ve done well if promoted a bit up the order. But at 34 years of age, and Pakistan not playing another ODI for a year, Ifti-mania might no longer be possible in the 50-over format. Pakistan might want to build towards a more modern and younger unit in preparation for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. It remains to be seen whether Ahmed finds himself in those plans. 10. Ravichandran Ashwin – India Ravi Ashwin. (Photo Source: ARUN SANKAR/AFP via Getty Images) Ravichandran Ashwin won the ICC World Cup with the Indian team in 2011 and was nowhere in the scene in ODIs before the World Cup began. However, he somehow snuck into the squad as an injury replacement. However, Ashwin has only played one game, against Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023, taking one wicket. After that, India went in with 2 spinners and three pacers in the rest of the matches. Ashwin himself had admitted that this ODI World Cup could be his last as he is already suffering from back injuries and at 37 years of age, might want to extend his time in Test cricket.
