2. West Indies vs Sri Lanka in 1987- 2

In 1987, the World Cup was played outside England for the first time, and India and Pakistan hosted the marquee tournament together. The West Indies, two-time world champions, locked horns with Sri Lanka in the seventh match of the competition played at the National Stadium, Karachi.

The toss favoured Sri Lanka captain Duleep Mendis, and he elected to bowl first. Mendis’ decision made Sri Lanka pay a heavy cost as the Windies opener Desmond Haynes and skipper Viv Richards smashed bowlers mercilessly. After the loss of the first two wickets, Haynes and Richards built an 182-run partnership that helped the Caribbean team deliver a giant target of 361 to Sri Lanka.

Haynes played a sensational innings of 105 off 124 while Richards chalked up 181 off just 125. The humongous target shattered Sri Lanka’s confidence as Mendis and his boys accumulated only 169 runs in their 50 overs. The Windies captain became the Player of the Match for his stunning batting performance.
