3. India versus Sri Lanka in 1999- 2
After getting the infamous defeat from Sri Lanka in the World Cup 1996 semi-final, India confronted the Arjuna Ranatunga-led side again in the 1999 edition of the tournament. This time, both teams locked horns at the County Garden and India hammered the 1996 World Cup champions by 157 runs.
The match is remembered for Sourav Gunguly’s best One-Day International (ODI) innings of 183 runs off 158 deliveries and the incredible 318-run partnership between Ganguly and Rahul Dravid for the second wicket. The marvellous stand between both batters is the second-highest partnership in the World Cup.
Earlier, it was Ranatunga, who won the toss against his counterpart Mohammad Azahruddin and invited India to bat first. Chaminda Vaas dismissed Sadagopan Ramesh in the first over of the game but Ganguly and Dravid handled the situation brilliantly and rescued India after the early blow. Along with Ganguly, Dravid also hit a ton in the contest. Both superb innings helped India to task Sri Lanka to chase a gigantic target of 374. Pursuing the total, Sri Lanka surrendered at a score of 216 in 42.3 overs.
