T20 World Cup 2022: 5 Rule Changes that will be game-changing in the tournament

The 2022 T20 World Cup is just a few weeks away and most of the top cricketing nations are indulging themselves in playing T20 cricket to prepare for the tournament. The host nation Australia has also started gearing up for the mega event. Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) on September 20 made several changes to its playing conditions which will come into effect from October 1. Hence, the new rules will be applied in the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup. On that note, let us take a look at five such rules which can have a say in a match. Let us begin: 5. Unfair movement from the fielding side The ICC in its new rule has stated that any "unfair and deliberate movement" by the fielders while the bowler is in his delivery stride could now result in the umpire awarding five penalty runs to the batting side, in addition to a call of dead ball. One such moment which can be recalled for this new rule was when Australian batter Steve Smith took the catch of Pakistani batter Fawad Alam during an ODI match played at the Abu Dhabi Stadium in 2014. Smith, fielding at slips, realized that Fawad Alam was set to play a sweep shot and quickly ran towards the leg slip where he completed a brilliant catch. Even though Fawad was given out by the on-field umpires, Smith received a lot of criticism for moving before the bowler bowled his delivery. 4. Running out of the non-striker In line with the laws framed by the MCC, the run out at the non-striker's end, also known as 'Mankading,' will move from the ‘Unfair Play’ section to the ‘Run out’ section. This way of effecting a run-out has been a talking point for a very long time. While some believe that it is an unfair way to inflict a dismissal, many also support the rule stating that the batters should be inside their crease at the non-striker's end. Recently, India's Deepti Sharma used this method to inflict a dismissal in the third ODI match against England Women as the Women in Blue went on to complete a famous series victory against England on their home soil. 3. Additional fielder inside the circle This rule can have a major say in the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup and it will also force the captain to put pressure on its bowlers to complete their overs quickly. As per the rule, if the fielding team is unable to bowl the allotted overs of the innings within the stipulated time period, then they would be penalized by bringing an additional fielder in the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs. This means the bowling team would be able to place a maximum of four fielders at the boundary line. The rule was recently applied in a high-pressure game between India and Pakistan where both teams were forced to put one more fielder inside the 30-yard circle. This rule was introduced by ICC in January this year and it will now be adopted in ODI matches after the completion of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League in 2023. 2. Use of Hybrid Pitch The ICC Ccmmittee has also decided to conduct ODI and T20I matches on hybrid pitches. Currently, the hybrid pitches are only used for Women's T20I matches, but that is set to change from October 1. Hybrid pitches are natural grass embedded in a matrix of synthetic fibers (which can be done in several ways). It has already been used in prominent football leagues along with The Hundred competition played in England. As compared to traditional wickets, the hybrid pitch requires less time to prepare for a game which can play a crucial role in the upcoming T20 World Cup where the matches will be played with little time gap between matches at the same venue. 1. Batters returning when caught "When a batter is out caught, the new batter will come in at the end the striker is, regardless of whether the batters crossed prior to the catch being taken." This rule can have a very big impact in close encounters. Often, when the last few wickets are left and one specialized batter is at the non-striker's end, normally during a catch the crossing over would give a distinct advantage to the set batter. However, with the new rule in place, the new batter coming to the crease will have to take the strike and it will not matter whether the last pair had crossed each other while the catch was being taken.
