Top Indian cricketers who represent India's culture
Cricket has brought millions together irrespective of regional and cultural barriers.
Ravichandran Ashwin (Tamil Nadu):
India's one of the greatest spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin from Tamil Nadu, is known for promoting Tamil culture and inspiring young cricketers. At a Chennai graduation ceremony, he emphasized Tamil’s significance, stating that Hindi is an official, not a national language. Ashwin’s book I Have the Streets: A Kutti Cricket Story, co-authored with Sidharth Monga, reflects his middle-class Tamil upbringing and love for Madras. He also runs the Gen-Next Cricket Institute in Chennai, mentoring aspiring players. Through his YouTube channel, Ashwin shares cricket insights, interviews, and movie reviews. In 2016, he collaborated with the Tamil Nadu Election Commission to promote electoral awareness.
Mohammed Siraj (Hyderabad):
India's ace pacer Mohammed Siraj hails from Hyderabad, Telangana. Born into a humble Hyderabadi Muslim family, his father, Mirza Mohammed Ghaus, was an auto-rickshaw driver, while his mother, Shabana Begum, is a homemaker. Despite him becoming one of India's star pacers, Mehdipatnam was where he spent his early years and remains rooted in its culture. Siraj is a proud ambassador of Hyderabad, promoting its traditions like the Marfa dance and sharing its iconic biryani with teammates. In October 2024, he was appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Hyderabad.
