Winning skipper Pat Cummins said:

"Nothing said much on the back of two losses. The energy on the field was great. They started very well. We bowled decently. We stayed at it. The bowlers hit the deck hard. I think high 300 was par on that. There is a lot of people watching this. Outside noise doesn't bother us a lot. All parts of the game came together today. We would want to keep it up," Cummins said.

Losing skipper Kusal Mendis said:

"Nissanka and Perera batted well. After that we struggled and got a low score. 290 or 300 would have been a good score. We couldn't rotate the strike much. Last two games we batted really well. Today the batters struggled. I have confidence in my batting unit. I think Madushanka bowled really well. He gave us two early wickets. We can field better. I hope Matheesha can recover quickly," Mendis said.

Adam Zampa adjudged POTM

"To be honest, I wasn't feeling great because I had a bit of a back spasm. Was playing through it the last couple of days. Today I felt better, bowled better today. (On coming out the attack at the end) I think it was the captain’s decision to get the off spinner against the lefties, and my back was also pretty sore. (On his performances so far) Personally, not at my best and last game particularly felt I could have been doing better. My job in this team is to take wickets in the middle order. Didn’t quite do that last game and put the pressure on the death bowlers. Today, I’ve been feeling better, but nice to come out on the winning side today. Took a while to get into the game, just got to keep that wicket taking attitude going, doesn’t matter if I leak some runs. (On the plans forward) I wish winning was that easy, we’ve got a big one against Pakistan in Bangalore next up. That’s going to be a tough one," Zampa said.

Australia (AUS) and Sri Lanka(SL) have had forgettable starts to their respective campaigns in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. They will look to turn their fortunes on Monday, October 16, when they lock horns in Lucknow in the 14th match of the prestigious tournament. However, only one team will be able to get their first win of the campaign.

The 'Men in Yellow' have the record of winning the most number of matches on the trot in ODI World Cups. They have won five World Cups while no other team has managed to win more than a couple. The Pat Cummins-led side came into the tournament on the back of five losses in their last six games. However, cricket enthusiasts still backed them to reach the semi-finals, at the least. One of the primary reasons for this is Australia's ability to raise their game by several notches in ICC events. However, the 2023 edition of the World Cup has not started the way Cummins and Co. would have expected.

They received thrashings in their first two matches against India and South Africa. Incidentally, Australia lost their previous two series heading into the World Cup against these two sides. Batting has crumbled for the Aussies in their first two games in the marquee event. They were bowled out for 199 by India and 177 by the Proteas. They will need to produce a more compact batting performance and the experienced players like David Warner and Steve Smith will have to stand up. It won't be wrong to say that Australia are missing the injured Travis Head, who was in good form ahead of the tournament.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have struggled in their bowling department as they have been handicapped by experienced bowlers like Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera getting injured prior to the tournament.

Sri Lanka have scored 326 and 344 in the two matches they played against South Africa and Pakistan, respectively. However, they ended up losing both games. Matters have worsened with captain Dasun Shanaka being ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Kusal Mendis, who has been in exceptional batting form, will lead in his absence. He will hope that the bowlers will be able to execute better against the dangerous, yet vulnerable Aussie batting. It will be interesting to see which team registers their first win in the tournament.
