BBL 2023-24: Alex Carey pokes fun at Jonny Bairstow's controversial stumping from Ashes 2023
Alex Carey stumped Jonny Bairstow during second Test of Ashes 2023.
Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey recalled the controversial stumping dismissal of Jonny Bairstow from Ashes 2023 during the Big Bash League 2023-24 fixture between Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes on Tuesday, January 09 at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. Playing for Adelaide Strikers, Carey inflicted a sharp stumping during the seventh over of the first innings.
The 32-year-old collected a wide down the leg side and quickly dislodged the bails seeing Nikhil Chaudhary lose his balance. The replay found Chaudhary on the line and as a result, the third umpire adjudged him out for a diamond duck. After the incident, Carey revealed that he loves to get batters out stumped whether it’s by standing up to the stumps or standing far behind while speaking with the commentators during the game.
“Yeah, always happy to get a stumping mate, however it comes. Up to the stumps or back. So that was good mate,” said Carey while speaking during the game.
Notably, Carey stumped Bairstow on Day 5 of the second Test of Ashes 2023 at Lord’s during the first session. The incident took place in the 52nd over of England’s second innings bowled by Cameron Green as Bairstow walked out of the crease as soon as the ball got into Carey’s gloves. Seeing an opportunity to stump him, the Australian wicketkeeper hit the stumps with an underarm throw and Bairstow was found short of his crease and adjudged out.
Carey also scored 36 (26) in Adelaide's victory
The dismissal sent shockwaves in the entire cricketing fraternity with Australia being questioned for not playing the sport under the right spirit. A couple of Australian players were even confronted by the MCC members in the long room which led to the latter being banned from their entry to the stadium.
Meanwhile, after inflicting the stumping, Carey also scored 36 (26) with the bat smashing four fours and a six helping Adelaide chase down 166 in 19.2 overs.
