BCCI pays 'VJD method' developer Jayadevan due remuneration after 25 years
The BCCI had just made a one-time payment to Jayadevan
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally paid the due remuneration to the developer of the popular "VJD method", after a massive 25 long years.
For the unversed, the VJD method is the process by which target scores are calculated if a cricket match is interrupted by rain. This definition of the VJD might resonate as being very similar to the Duckworth-Lewis which is primarily used in world cricket.
The Duckworth-Lewis method is also used to set winning targets in international matches that are disrupted by rain. The VJD method, named after its developer V Jayadevan, however, is being used extensively since 1998 in domestic cricket matches in India.
I made many attempts to bring my method to BCCI's notice: Jayadevan recalls old times
"I actually did the programming to teach a BTech student. Since I was interested in cricket, I took the problem to find the target score in cricket when the play is interrupted by rain. But as my interest in the subject grew, the final output came out to be the best. I made many attempts to bring the method to the notice of BCCI. It was Sunil Gavaskar who finally understood its merits and assured to take it forward," V Jayadevan said while speaking to TNIE.
Jayadevan stated that as someone from the science background, he always had a knack in developing and creating things. The VJD method too was one of his casual creations. But he had no idea that the method would get so popular and widespread. However, strangely and sadly enough, even after such a revolutionary development, the BCCI failed to recognise the worth of Jayadevan's creation and provided him just a meagre one-time remuneration, which he used for developing a better version of the software.
Now, after 25 long years, the BCCI has finally recognised Jayadevan's contribution and paid him his due remuneration. Jayadevan says he in present times will continue speaking with the IPL chairman Brijesh and the other dignitaries for having the VJD being used in the IPL as well.
