Champions Trophy 2025: Mark Wood leaves field after hurting left knee in AFG vs ENG clash
Mark Wood took just one wicket in England's Champions Trophy 2025 opener against Australia.
England suffered a major injury scare during their must-win ICC Champions Trophy 2025 clash against Afghanistan as fast-bowler Mark Wood walked off the field due to a suspected left knee injury. Wood, who was in the middle of his fourth over during the powerplay, looked in discomfort and had to get medical attention before eventually leaving the field.
England, needing a victory to keep their semi-final hopes alive, entered the match with a balanced side comprising three pacers and leg-spinner Adil Rashid as their main bowling attack. With Joe Root and Liam Livingstone sharing the fifth bowler's role, any injury to a frontline pacer could be costly for the side.
The Jos Buttler-led side made one change to their playing XI, with Jamie Overton replacing the injured Brydon Carse. Meanwhile, Wood has had a history of injuries, including knee problems that have troubled him in the past.
The incident occurred during Wood’s fourth over when he delivered a ball to Ibrahim Zadran and immediately signaled for medical help. As the physio examined his strapped left knee, the pacer was seen lying on his back in discomfort. Despite attempting to complete the over, he frowned while bowling and was subsequently taken off the field for further assessment.

Mark Wood returns to the field
Despite the initial worries, there was a positive update for the Three Lions as the pacer returned to the field after a 38-minute absence. However, due to ICC regulations, he had to wait another 30 minutes before being allowed to bowl again.
A statement from the England camp later confirmed that Wood was dealing with a suspected knee injury, though it remained uncertain whether he would be able to complete his spell. With England opting for an extra batter in this crucial match, losing a specialist pacer like Wood could disturb their game plans, forcing Buttler to rely more on his part-time bowlers.
