England Women announce squad for ODI series against India, Alice Capsey, Freya Kemp set for debuts
Both Capsey and Kemp played a crucial role in England's T20I series win over India.
English youngster Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp have been included in the ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against India. Both players were sensational in England's 2-1 win in the T20I series and are awarded ODI caps. The veteran opener Tammy Beaumont also makes her return to international cricket after getting dropped from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones will continue to captain the English side in the absence of injured star Heather Knight.
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced their strong 15-member squad for the ODI series on Friday (September 16). Capsey, 18, has already established herself as one of the best upcoming English talents and was expected to make it to the squad. She scored 74 runs in three T20I matches against India, including an unbeaten match-winning knock of 38 runs off 24 balls in the last match.
Kemp, the 17-year-old pacer, failed to take any wicket in three matches against India but smashed unbeaten 51 runs off 37 balls in the second T20I. She became the youngest English player, male or female, to score the T20I fifty, and a second-youngest to reach this milestone. With Katherine Brunt and Natalie Sciver out injured, Kemp was also expected to make the squad.
As a younger player that's what I thrive off: Alice Capsey
England youngsters, in the absence of senior players, have been impressive against India in the T20I series. The 21-year-old Lauren Bell also made her debut in T20I cricket last week. After the last match, Capsey revealed that youngsters are taking responsibility in the absence of senior players and that is helping her to thrive off in this series.
"We've all taken it upon ourselves to do our bit and really own our role. To have them around is amazing because it brings experience and it brings clarity to the team, so it's given us a little bit more responsibility earlier in our careers and as a younger player that's what I thrive off," Capsey said after the last T20I match.
"It's really nice to be given that responsibility and Kempy has been outstanding when she's come into the international team. Her fifty in the second T20 and just her overall confidence when she goes on to the pitch is brilliant," Capsey added.
England ODI squad: Amy Jones (c & wk), Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Freya Davies, Alice Davidson-Richards, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone (vc), Freya Kemp, Emma Lamb, Issy Wong, Danni Wyatt.
