Gautam Gambhir opens up on Suryakumar Yadav's vice-captaincy
Suryakumar Yadav has been named vice-captain for the first time in the absence of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.
After an embarrassing ODI series defeat during the Bangladesh tour last month, the Indian management made some big changes to both T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka. Hardik Pandya is leading India's T20I squad once again as Rohit Sharma is reportedly given extra rest to get fully recovered from his thumb injury ahead of the ODI series starting January 10.
KL Rahul is also missing from the T20I squad alongside Rishabh Pant. The management has named the in-form Suryakumar Yadav the vice-captain of the T20I squad against Sri Lanka.
Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir, when asked about Suryakumar's promotion to the vice-captain role, said that there are no other options for leadership roles in the young squad announced for the Sri Lanka series.
"I don't think we need to look into it that much because we have to wait and watch once Rohit comes into the T20 squad whether they are going to still continue with Hardik as the captain and Surya as the vice-captain. We will have to wait and watch because how many options did you have with this young squad?" Gambhir said on Star Sports.
You can't keep chopping and changing: Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir also added that having Hardik as captain and Suryakumar as vice-captain in future will be a good decision. He said that even if Rohit comes back to T20Is, the selectors should not look to re-change the leadership roles.
"Now he has been trusted with leadership and being the vice-captain of the country is always a great honour. So I am sure he is going to do a good job. Even if Rohit Sharma comes in and the selectors feel that Hardik is the right guy and Surya is the vice-captain, you can't keep chopping and changing. If this is your leadership core, so be it," Gambhir added.
