Glenton Stuurman ruled out of South Africa's squad for Australia Test series, Lizaad Williams named replacement
Stuurman suffered an injury to his abdominal muscle while playing a domestic match.
Due to abdominal muscle injury, pace bowler Glenton Stuurman will not play in South Africa's forthcoming Test series against Australia. Stuurman sustained the injury over the weekend while playing for the Warriors in a domestic first-class match. Lizaad Williams, another inexperienced pacer like Stuurman, has been called up for the Test series in Australia.
Stuurman has participated in two Test matches for South Africa, one in February against New Zealand, away from home and the other in April against Bangladesh, at home, as a Covid-substitute. Williams has also taken three wickets in two Tests for South Africa this year, both of which were against Bangladesh.
Williams scalped six wickets last week while playing for the Titans in a domestic first-class match against the Knights. He had participated in county Northamptonshire games throughout the English summer. Although he didn't play, he was a member of the South African white-ball team that competed in England in July.
South Africa scheduled to play warm-up game against Cricket Australia XI
Before the series in Australia, every South African Test player, except Temba Bavuma, Kagiso Rabada, and Anrich Nortje, will participate in at least one red-ball domestic match. While Rabada's workload is being monitored, Bavuma has been allowed time off after a disastrous T20 World Cup campaign, and Nortje has been granted a No-Objection Certificate to compete in the Abu Dhabi T10 competition, which takes place from November 23 to December 4.
South Africa will play against Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane on December 09 so as to prepare themselves for the series. On December 17, the opening Test begins at the Gabba, followed by the Boxing Day and New Year's Day Tests in Melbourne and Sydney, respectively. South Africa will need to win the series in order to compete in the upcoming World Test Championship final.
Updated South Africa squad: Dean Elgar (capt), Temba Bavuma, Gerald Coetzee, Theunis de Bruyn, Sarel Erwee, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Lizaad Williams, Khaya Zondo.
