‘He will learn from it and stand up again’ - Shikhar Dhawan backs Suryakumar Yadav amid latter's horrid run of form
Suryakumar Yadav was unable to impress during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 and in the three-match ODI series against Australia as well.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 saw India retain the coveted trophy after they won the four-match Test series 2-1. One of the talking points of the series was the debut of star Indian batter Suryakumar Kumar and his induction into the Test squad.
The world’s number one T20I batter had all eyes on him as he made his Test debut. But he couldn't have a dream debut, as he only managed to score eight runs in the Nagpur Test.
Following his disappointing showing, many questioned the decision to hand Surya his Test debut. However, the veteran Indian batter Shikhar Dhawan has come forward to defend Surya and opined that giving him time to learn will prove to be beneficial for India.
"Suryakumar Yadav has performed really well. He has consistently performed in the last couple of years. (He hasn’t done well) in a couple of series, which is very natural," Dhawan said in an interview with Aaj Tak.
"If we talk about the Test match, the wickets are very different in a Test; that is the biggest challenge. When we played in India, there were turning tracks prepared because India had to win games. Things are not easy for batters, no matter how big he is," he said.
"Not only spinning surfaces, batting is not easy on green tracks prepared for fast bowlers. The challenges increase, and that is where experience comes into play. When a youngster comes in, he doesn’t have that experience. He will fall three-four times, but he will learn from it and stand up again," he added.
Suryakumar Yadav will look improve on his form during IPL 2023
After a disappointing showing in the recent Test and the ODI series between India and Australia, where Surya was dismissed for three consecutive ducks, the ace middle-order batter will be keen on improving his form in the upcoming edition of the IPL.
The 32-year-old will once again don the jersey of the five-time champions Mumbai Indians as the team looks to put an improved showing after a disappointing campaign in 2022.
