Following Pakistan’s exit from the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 and India’s success in the tournament, reaching the summit clash with one game in hand, there has been a significant shift in the ICC ODI Men’s team rankings.

Team India has overtaken Pakistan in the latest ODI team rankings. Currently sitting in second place, India overtook Pakistan after the latter’s loss to Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup Super Four clash. The current rankings see Australia top the leaderboard with a 118 rating. The side is followed by India in second place with a 116 rating. Furthermore, Pakistan dropped to third place with a 115 rating.

Pakistan slip up in rankings after back-to-back losses in Asia Cup

It is worth noting that England and New Zealand occupy fourth and fifth place in the standings with 103 and 102 ratings, respectively. It could be deduced that Pakistan losing to India by 228 runs in the Super Four, and losing to Sri Lanka, facing elimination, is one of the biggest reasons why the rankings of the ICC Men’s ODI team shifted.

India has been in sensational form throughout the competition. Ever since the first game against Pakistan was washed out, India has registered brilliant wins against Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan as well. They qualified for the final of the tournament after their recent win against Sri Lanka, with one Super Four clash against Bangladesh in hand.

Notably, India take on Bangladesh on Friday, September 15 at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. Bangladesh have already been disqualified from the Asia Cup 2023, due to the subpar showings in the competitions.

In the summit clash of the tournament, India will be facing off against Sri Lanka on Sunday, September 17. Sri Lanka put forth a sensational performance in the virtual semi-final against Pakistan. Through brilliant showings by Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Charith Asalanka, they chased down the target and won the game, reaching the summit clash.
