Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah laid the foundation for an international cricket stadium in Tumakuru, on Monday, December 2, around 70 kilometres from Bengaluru. Though there are proposed international stadiums in Karnataka, Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy stadium only gets the privilege of hosting all the international cricket games in the state.

CM Siddaramaiah stated that 50 acres of land had been allocated for the international stadium. He feels that the new cricketing venue will help in the growth of Tumakuru's economy and also facilitate the development of sports in the district.

“We have given 50 acres of land to Karnataka State Cricket Association for the construction of an international cricket stadium. This will complement the economic growth and sports progress of the Tumakuru district. I have instructed them to complete the stadium's construction as soon as possible and fulfil the expectations of the cricket lovers," Siddaramaiah said in a post on his 'X' handle.

As per reports, the stadium will be built on 41 acres of land allocated to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) near Sorekunte. The state-of-the-art facility has an estimated cost of around ₹150 crore and is expected to be completed within the next couple of years.

Cricket stadium proposal for Mysore

Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has also proposed another international stadium near Mysore. The Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) handed over 20.8 acres of land to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for the construction of a cricket stadium, earlier this year. The Chief Minister said that the KSCA has requested land for a cricket stadium in Mysuru as well.

"We will provide land in Mysuru too," he asserted.

Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier mentioned that the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches will not be held exclusively in Bengaluru but also tier-two towns of the state. BCCI president Roger Binny earlier said that the matches in the cash-rich league will be distributed among the smaller cities like Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad and Belagavi, apart from the iconic M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, which has a seating capacity of 40,000, which is less in comparison to the other international stadiums in the cricket-crazy country.

India has a whopping 54 stadiums which have hosted international matches so far. No other country has more international venues than India. Australia and England are joint-second in terms of countries with the most international cricketing venues. They have 23 stadiums each which have hosted international fixtures.
