IPL 2024: Jhye Richardson doubtful for full season as Delhi Capitals face major setback
Richardson's injury has kept him out of action since the latter part of the BBL, and also sidelined him during the recent home series against the West Indies.
In an update from the Delhi Capitals camp, co-owner Parth Jindal revealed that their prized acquisition, Australian pacer Jhye Richardson, may miss the initial phase of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League due to a side strain. Richardson's injury has kept him out of action since the latter part of the BBL, and also sidelined him during the recent home series against West Indies. The Capitals had secured Richardson's services for INR 5 crore during the December mini-auction.
Formerly with the Punjab Kings in 2021, Richardson's absence marks a blow for the Capitals' pace attack. However, the franchise can find solace in the return of South African speedster Anrich Nortje. The South African pacer, who has been out of action since September 2023 due to a groin injury, missed the World Cup but is primed for a comeback in IPL 2024. His availability from the outset provides a significant boost to Delhi's bowling line-up as they aim to make a mark in the upcoming season.
“Richardson is in touch and go, but will definitely be available for some part of IPL. Nortje is fit. Right now, he is bowing at 80% intensity. Next week, he will bowl at 100%. He's going to make his comeback in the IPL. He is going to join our camp and should be good to go for our first game,” Jindal said to ESPNCricinfo.

Welcome news for Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2024
The Proteas seamer is set to rejoin the squad in Vizag after recovering from injuries, as confirmed by the co-owner. Nortje, who endured a groin injury, featured in ten matches during the 2023 season before departing due to personal reasons. Despite participating in the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) season in the USA, he faced setbacks, as he pulled out of the home ODI series against Australia due to a suspected back stress fracture.
Consequently, he was sidelined from the ODI World Cup as well. Concerns lingered regarding his IPL availability after missing out on the SA20 matches. However, with his recovery progressing positively, the right arm pacer's return bolsters Delhi Capitals' bowling arsenal for the upcoming IPL season, who were stuck in a web of injuries to their key players including Rishabh Pant.
