‘It is not ideal and everyone knows that’ - Rohit Sharma concerned about rising air pollution in India
"I am pretty sure that the concerned people are taking the necessary steps to avoid this kind of situation," Rohit Sharma said.
With the World Cup 2023 fever grasping every fan in the world, the spectators have been treated with some exceptional games of cricket in the tournament so far. The Indian team, which is currently unbeaten in the tournament, gears up to take on Sri Lanka in the 33rd game of the competition. Both sides will take center stage at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, November 2.
Ahead of the game, one talking point has been the quality of the air in Mumbai. Speaking of the same, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma came forward to talk about the consistently declining air quality in the city.
Rohit opined that it is crucial that the air quality is preserved for future generations and stated that he is sure that the concerned people are taking the necessary steps to keep it under control.
"In an ideal world, you do not want a situation like this, but I am pretty sure that the concerned people are taking the necessary steps to avoid this kind of situation. It is not ideal, and everyone knows that,” Rohit Sharma was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
"Looking at our future generations, your kids, my kid. Obviously, it is important that they get to live without any fear. Every time I get to speak outside of cricket, or not discuss cricket, I always talk about this. We have to look after our future generations,” he added.
Ace English batter Joe Root raised the same concerns when England lost to South Africa, and with many others voicing their concerns, air pollution has quickly become a major talking point. Seeing the deteriorating quality of the air, the BCCI came forward to announce that they would stop setting off fireworks in Delhi and Mumbai for the remaining matches of the World Cup.
"BCCI is sensitive to environmental concerns. I took up the matter formally with the ICC and there won't be any fireworks display in Mumbai, which can add to the pollution level," BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement recently.
After India’s clash against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai will have two more games to host in the ODI World Cup 2023: Afghanistan vs. Australia on November 7, and the first semi-final on November 15. Furthermore, Delhi only has one game left to host, Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh on November 6.
