Lack of opportunities was getting to me, MLC came as a breath of fresh air: Harmeet Singh
Harmeet Singh speaks on his cricket journey as he looks all set to play for USA national team in the coming days
Harmeet Singh's journey from India to the USA's Major League Cricket (MLC) has been one marked by challenges, victories, and personal growth. At the age of 30, Harmeet, driven by what he perceived as a "lack of opportunities" in the Indian cricket setup, ventured across the oceans to find a more stable base and fresh opportunities for his cricketing aspirations.
His landing in the MLC was a triumphant one, as he became the first player picked in the inaugural MLC draft, endorsed by his Minor League Cricket franchise, Seattle Orcas. His impactful performances in the league showcased his mettle, as he contributed to his team's journey to the final, where they were narrowly defeated by Nicholas Pooran's team.
Harmeet recently opened up on his journey from Mumbai cricket to the US cricket scene, highlighting how the pandemic took away his mother and grandfather to make things worse.
"I came here in 2020 September and at that time also it was mid-Covid-19 and then after that, in 2021 April I lost her. That was the time we had the second (Covid-19) wave in India so it was very tough. I lost my grandfather the month after that. Those are the two people who really supported me in my cricket and took me everywhere," he told News18.
Harmeet's cricketing journey has embraced change, even extending to his bowling action. With a focus on adaptability and spin dynamics, he has honed his skills for the shorter format, excelling as a T20 specialist. Reflecting on his Mumbai cricket days, where he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Suresh Raina, Harmeet strikes a balance between memories and present-day focus.
"Shardul (Thakur) and Sidhhesh (Lad) are my childhood friends, so we do keep chatting here and there. We go a long way back. We are from the same school," he added.
