'Maybe that is what Arshdeep needs to do' - Sunil Gavaskar offers invaluable advice to Arshdeep Singh following non-selection for Windies tour
Arshdeep Singh could not find a place in India's ODI side that will face West Indies in July-August.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named the Test and ODI squads on Friday, June 23 as India travel to the Caribbean to face the West Indies in a multi-format series in July-August. Talented Bengal pacer Mukesh Kumar has been named in both the ODI and Test sides, while Mohammed Shami has reportedly been given a rest.
However, India's young pace sensation Arshdeep Singh has been left out from the ODI side. Playing for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League 2023, the left-arm pacer failed to put on a show, except for when he defended 15 runs in the last over against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede in match 31. Overall, in the 10-team tournament, Arshdeep conceded runs at 9.70, something that overshadowed his 17 wickets in 14 games in the season.
India legend Sunil Gavaskar came out in support of Arshdeep, advising the 24-year-old to keep taking wickets in clusters in the domestic circuit.
"Sometimes maybe being left out of the team is also great incentive to try and pick up heaps of wickets. Maybe that is what Arshdeep needs to do. He needs to pick 5-fors continuously and then he will be automatically picked for the team," Gavaskar told Sports Today.
Arshdeep is the future in all formats: Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar hailed Arshdeep Singh as the future of Indian cricket in all formats. The celebrated commentator compared the left-arm pacer to Jasprit Bumrah, who began as a T20 bowler and transitioned into an all-format asset.
"He is the future in all formats. He has already started to do little bit well in England in county cricket. Just like Jaspreet Bumrah came on as a T20 bowler and went on to spearhead the Indian bowling attack. Arshdeep Singh is somebody who can play all formats of the game and you need to encourage him to do that," said the 73-year-old.
Arshdeep's most recent ODI encounter was against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval in November 2022. The seamer from Punjab has just played 3 ODIs and is yet to pick up a wicket in the format.
