MS Dhoni is no longer playing like player but as a mentor: Mohammad Kaif
Under Dhoni's leadership, CSK are currently third on the IPL 2023 Points Table.
Former India international Mohammad Kaif believes that the legendary stumper-batter MS Dhoni is no longer playing as a player for Chennai Super Kings but also mentoring other cricketers in the process. Notably, under his able leadership, players like Matheesha Pathirana, Tushar Deshpande, and Shivam Dube among many others have played some brilliant cricket and courtesy of which, the four-time champions are currently third on the IPL Points Table.
Talking about their performance in the season, Kaif mentioned that Dhoni chooses his own team, backs his players, and teaches the young cricketers to do well in order to get the job done.
“Mahi (MS Dhoni) is no longer playing as a player but as a mentor. He chooses the team. Let's get on the field. He does not tease the seniors much but keeps on teaching the youth all the time. He wants every player, playing under him, to perform well as it will make the team's job easier,” Kaif said on Star Sports' Cricket Live.
Only Dhoni knows when he will retire: Harbhajan Singh
Meanwhile, despite rumours of Dhoni retiring at the end of the 2023 season, the 41-year-old hinted that he might continue to play in IPL 2024 as well. During the toss against Lucknow Super Giants, the World Cup-winning captain told commentator Danny Morrison that he has never made any comment on his future as of now.
“You've decided it is my last,” Dhoni replied with a smile to Morrison's question at the Ekana Stadium on May 3.
Following the incident, former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh mentioned that no one knows when the cricketer will call time on professional cricket. The off-spinner also stated that if he continues to play for CSK beyond IPL 2023, the fans will definitely be happy.
“Only MS Dhoni knows when Dhoni will retire. I said last year that will play this year. I don't know if he will play next year as well. Yes, if he plays next year, the fans will be happy to see him playing. Fans have always wanted to see him playing,” Harbhajan Singh said.
