India and England are locking horns in Match 29 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Sunday, October 29 at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. The Men in Blue were asked to bat first for the first time in the tournament and captain Rohit Sharma ended up playing first over maiden against David Willey.

However, the Indian skipper took on the left-arm seamer on in his second over and managed to get 18 runs in it. Rohit smacked one four and two sixes against Willey as he stamped his authority on the English seamer and showed his aggressive intent. On the last ball of the over, Rohit came down the track and smacked Willy audaciously over his head for a maximum. The shot made the commentator Nasser Hussain and the entire Lucknow crowd erupt in awe.

However, following that over, England pulled things back as they dismissed Shubman Gill (9 off 13), Virat Kohli (0 off 9) and Shreyas Iyer (4 off 16) cheaply to leave India reeling at 40/3 after 11.5 overs. Seeing his team in trouble, Rohit held one end and played a magnificent innings of 87 (101) smashing ten fours and three sixes.

India score 229/9 in the first innings 

He got good support from KL Rahul (39 off 58) as the duo added 91 runs for the fourth wicket to stabilize the Indian innings.  Following their dismissals, Suryakumar Yadav played a brilliant knock of 49 (47) to help India cross the 200-run mark. After being involved in an unfortunate run out against New Zealand, the swashbuckling batter smacked four fours and a six to keep the run flow going.

They finished their innings on 229/9 in their allotted 50 overs as David Willey starred with the ball for England. The left-arm seamer picked up 3/45 in ten overs while Chris Woakes (2/33) and Adil Rashid (2/35) picked up two wickets each for England.
