"We're taking the risk and not going with the extra keeper, which obviously has a degree of risk to it," Finch said.

The defending champions Australia have one of the strongest squads in the T20 World Cup 2022 and they have covered most of the bases in terms of different roles. Meanwhile, Josh Inglis’ freak injury while playing golf has opened the way for Cameron Green as the all-rounder has been drafted into the 15-member squad as a replacement.

The move raised a few eyebrows as Inglis was the only backup wicketkeeper in the squad after the first-choice Matthew Wade. Therefore, in case of an injury to Wade, Australia will have to manage without a full-time wicketkeeper in the squad. However, skipper Aaron Finch explained the reason behind bringing Green instead of a wicketkeeper as Inglis' replacement.

Finch admitted that it is a big risk to go into the tournament without a backup wicketkeeper but highlighted the balance that Cameron Green brings into the squad. He further expressed his disappointment at Inglis' freak injury that he picked while playing golf with his teammates.

"We're taking the risk and not going with the extra keeper, which obviously has a degree of risk to it. We feel as though Cam gives us a little bit better balance to the squad. That's definitely a risk, there's no doubt about that," Finch on the eve of their clash in Sydney against New Zealand.

"That was a freak accident. I was playing in Josh's group and I feel so bad for him. We didn't realise the club broke, we just thought he hit it poorly, and he looked down and there's blood everywhere. It was pretty distressing there for a little bit," he added.

In a surprising move, prolific opener David Warner has also been training with the wicketkeeping gloves in the nets and might well be an option if needed. Australia will start their campaign against New Zealand on October 22 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
