GT vs RR: Trent Boult crosses 20-wicket mark in first over since IPL 2020
Boult has now taken a total of 20 wickets in the first over of an innings, which is the most since IPL 2020. Jofra Archer and Mukesh Chaudhary stand joint-second in the list with 5 wickets each.
Continuing the enthralling action in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023, Rajasthan Royals (RR) squared off against the home side Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match No. 23 on Sunday, April 16 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Winning the toss, RR invited Gujarat's batters to set the target. Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson's decision to bowl first proved to be a masterstroke as Trent Boult got rid of experienced keeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha in the very first over to leave the home side in trouble.
With this wicket, the Kiwi bowler has now taken as many as 20 wickets in the first over of an innings since the 2020 edition of the cash-rich league. Saha started well as he flicked a boundary off Boult's inswinging yorker. However, that remained his only scoring shot as the Siliguri-born batter was dismissed on the very next delivery.
The ball that dismissed Saha was bowled on a good length which he tried to flick as well, only to edge it high up in the air. As many as four fielders converged in the middle to get hold of the ball but it was Boult himself who managed to grab the ball after it popped out of Samson's gloves. With the dismissal, the ace pacer managed to inscribe in his name the unique aforementioned record, which seems to be unassailable at this point as the joint-second in the list include English pacer Jofra Archer and left-arm pacer Mukesh Chaudhary, both of whom have claimed only five wickets each in the first innings of the tournament since 2020.
Boult, who made his debut in 2015 with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), has played a total of 82 matches thus far, claiming 98 wickets at an impressive average of 26.45 and a decent economy of 8.28. His most successful campaign was in the year 2020, where he managed to grab 25 wickets with career-best figures of 4/18. In the ongoing edition, he has managed to take 6 wickets thus far in four appearances for Royals.
