Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer smashed their respective half-centuries while the seam bowlers again came back to haunt as India dismantled Sri Lanka by a massive margin of 302 runs in the ongoing sixteenth edition of the World Cup. Mohammed Shami continued his sensational form with figures of 5/18 in just five overs as the Men in Blue brushed their neighbours aside with a resounding victory at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With this, they also became the first team to qualify for the semi-final of the marquee tournament.

Speaking about how match No. 33 panned out, skipper Kusal Mendis won the toss, and Sri Lanka elected to field first. Captain Rohit Sharma suffered a rare failure in this edition as he got dismissed for just four on the second delivery of the innings. Kohli then joined Gill, and the duo added 189 runs for the second wicket. The former slammed 92 while Kohli got out for 88. Shreyas Iyer finally returned to some form with his knock of 82 off just 56. Ravindra Jadeja provided the finishing touch with his cameo of 35 off 24 as team India posted a huge total of 357/8 on the board in their allotted 50 overs.

Pacer Dilshan Madushanka impressed everyone and was the pick of the Lankan bowlers for his spell of 5/80 (10). In reply, it was Déjà vu for the Lions as it turned out to be a repeat of the Asia Cup 2023 final. The top three out of the four batters bagged a duck as Indian seamers showcased their skill and quality bowling yet again. Mohammed Siraj delivered a spell of 3/16 (seven), while Jasprit Bumrah also picked up a solitary wicket as Sri Lanka got bowled out cheaply for a mere 55 in 19.4 overs. The Sri Lankans just got blown away against India’s breathtaking pace attack, as they never looked like even going after the target. For his solid spell, Shami grabbed the Player of the Match award.
