Dale Steyn raring for a comeback to international cricket
Dale Steyn reamined unsold in the auction of the Indian Premier League.
Dale Steyn has arguably been among the greatest bowlers South Africa have ever produced. However, the speedster has been encountering issues surrounding his fitness over the last couple of years. Since the end of 2015, the Proteas player has played four ODIs and as many Tests for his nation. Frequent injuries have been a massive roadblock to what has been an illustrious career thus far.
However, despite the string of injuries, the veteran hasn’t run out of steam by any stretch of the imagination. The 34-year old cricketer’s passion of playing hasn’t died down one bit. The Phalaborwa-born cricketer has recently that he’ll be playing County cricket for Hampshire in June, which would mark his return to competitive cricket. Steyn recently spoke about his plans in a recent media interaction.
“12 or 15 overs, not competitive”- Steyn
Meanwhile, Steyn won’t be playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He entered the auction at a base price of INR 1 crores, however, found no bidders. “I’m going to take another month off. I’m not going to the IPL (Indian Premier League). I’m looking to go over to Hampshire in June to play a little bit of cricket, then Sri Lanka in July.” Steyn was quoted as saying by SuperSport television. The pacer also mentioned about the endurance and fitness required to survive the rigours of Test cricket.
“I could get through 12 or 15 overs but that’s not enough to be competitive in a Test match,” he added. Meanwhile, Steyn is also on the verge of becoming the highest wicket-taker for South Africa in Tests. With 419 wickets in 86 games, he is two wickets shy of Shaun Pollock’s tally of 421 wickets in 108 games.
South Africa is scheduled to tour Sri Lanka in July and August and Steyn has an opportunity to play, provided he finds his form, rhythm and fitness in due course.
