D’Arcy Short eyes good bowling exploits in upcoming series against India

Australia’s dashing left-hand opening batsman D’Arcy Short is back into the national team after a while and will be looking to utilise the opportunity in the upcoming limited-over series against India to brighten his hope of playing in the World Cup. Short’s capacity to hit the ball is already known and his chinaman bowling can be an added asset for captain Aaron Finch in the series to kick off on February 24. The two teams will play in two T20Is followed by a five-match ODI series.

Short, who last played international cricket against India last November at home, had a good run both with the bat and ball in the recently concluded Big Bash League (BBL). Playing for Hobart Hurricanes who topped the table in the league stage but lost to Melbourne Stars in the semi-final, Short ended as the second highest scorer of the season with 559 runs and also took 10 wickets.

Short, 28, though hasn’t bowled much in T20Is, he has proved himself to be a bowler with ability in T20s with 20 wickets besides scoring over 2,000 runs. “If I can give two or three overs or even four or five in one-day cricket then it’s always going to help my selection in the end and hopefully it goes in my favour,” Short, who has played four ODIs and 18 T20Is for Australia so far, was quoted as saying by Cricket.com.au.

Sridharan Sriram also praises Short’s growth as a bowler

Short’s bowling skills are getting honed by a former India player and he is Sridharan Sriram, Australia’s spin coach. “We’ve seen in the Big Bash, he’s bowled a lot more than the previous years which I think is a very good sign for our cricket team going forward,” Sriram told Cricket.com.au.

Short, too, has thanked the mentor. He recalled Sriram’s advice of keeping things simple and maintain his momentum and that the Indian has already worked a lot with him when he came to India as part of Australia ‘A’ last August-September. Sriram also felt that Short bowling more in the BBL was a good sign for Australia’s national side.
