David Warner tweets about his well-being after the bouncer scare
The Australian squad flies to Dhaka on Friday for the two-Test tour which begins on August 27.
Just days before Australia’s opening Test match against Bangladesh, opener David Warner was a victim of a vicious bouncer from team mate Josh Hazlewood and retired hurt after it hurt his neck during the intra-squad match in Darwin on Tuesday.
The left-hander immediately dropped to his knees after his attempted hook shot went awry at Marrara Oval. Even though he appeared shaken, Warner quickly gathered himself up and walked off the ground unassisted after Steve Smith rushed to check on his deputy.
He was dismissed for four in the first innings and had only made two from 14 balls when he was struck, denying him time in the middle before Australia’s two-test tour of Bangladesh as he retired hurt. Cricket Australia tweeted that he was “recovering” from the blow, without elaborating on his condition.
Cricket.com.au said the fiery left-hander had passed a concussion test and was available for the tour of Bangladesh, but would sit out the rest of the intra-squad match in Darwin, Australia’s Northern Territory.
He took to Twitter today informing his well-wishers that he was fine now as he posted a picture of himself in a rather unique shirt with a message that consisted of an underlying joke about nets. “Thanks everyone for the kind messages. I’m all ok. Boys bought me a shirt for tomorrow. Think I need more net time #scorches”
Unfortunate incident
Focus on player safety has been heightened since the tragic death of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes who was also Warner’s team-mate. Hughes passed away from bleeding in the brain in November 2014 after being hit on the base of the skull by a rising ball at the Sydney Cricket Ground during a domestic match. In fact, a Pakistani cricketer, Zubair Ahmed passed away on August 14 after a bouncer hit his head during a match in Mardan.
