DDCA eyeing Gautam Gambhir for captaincy despite KP Bhaskar's extension
A new development may open doors for experienced bowler Parwinder Awana, who was not named in the squad for the season.
The Delhi team management is looking for a captain and is considering Gautam Gambhir for the job yet again. Interestingly, he was dropped from the captaincy for Vijay Hazare Trophy last season and had a public face-off with coach KP Bhaskar after the end of the tournament where Gambhir accused the coach of creating an environment of mistrust in the Team.
After this issue, Gambhir was also not named in either of the three squads for Duleep Trophy. Not one to mince his words, Gambhir said he was not even informed by selectors Atul Wassan, Nikhil Chopra and Robin Singh Junior about being removed from captaincy. With DDCA giving Bhaskar an extension last week, it will be interesting to see whether Gautam Gambhir will take up the job again or not.
Major Blow for Delhi this season
According to reports from Sportzwiki, Delhi pacer Pradeep Sangwan is expected to miss the upcoming domestic season due to a shoulder surgery. He was named the 40-member preliminary squad for the season but now is likely to miss the entire season. The southpaw had undergone shoulder treatment in the past as well.
This new development may open doors for experienced bowler Parwinder Awana, who was not named in the squad for the season. Sangwan has impressed in the last Ranji season by grabbing 15 wickets in four games at an average of 22.00 and also scored 210 runs at an average of 70.00. Despite not playing the whole tournament, he easily was one of the best players in the state. Hence, his absence comes as a big blow for Delhi.
The 26-year-old pacer has played a total of 54 first-class first class and 38 List A matches. He was also a member of the Indian team that won the 2008 U19 World Cup under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. He was also part of Gujarat Lions in IPL this year. Delhi will take on Assam in their first game of the season at home ground Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi from October 6 to 9.
