England One-Day Cup: Surrey's Rikki Clarke suffers a terrible finger injury
Another player Ollie Pope also suffered a shoulder injury.
Injuries seem to be the flavour of the ongoing cricket season as both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the domestic One-Day Cup in England have been hit hard with a slew of injuries. Earlier, it was reported that Jason Roy of Surrey had hurt his hamstring during the match against Essex, which later turned out to be a back spasm, casting a doubt over his place in England’s World Cup squad.
Now it has come to light that two more players from Surrey were injured during this match which was their first win in the tournament after two back-to-back losses against Gloucestershire and Sussex. Young batsman Ollie Pope and veteran all-rounder Rikki Clarke also saw bodily damage done to them while playing for the team on the field.
Ollie Pope, who had earlier caught a wonderful full-blooded square cut by Alastair Cook off Morne Morkel, later injured his shoulder as he dove near the boundary in an attempt to save a four. He left the field after treatment from the team physio after the 28th over of Essex’s innings. He had made 39 runs while batting for Surrey.
Clarke damaged his finger trying to scoop a low catch of Dan Lawrence at slip off Morne Morkel. The slip fielder’s finger jammed in the ground and was dislocated at the first joint and was taken off the field for treatment. Clarke later shared an image of his injury on his Instagram account and congratulated his teammates for a 65-run win over Essex.
