England vs India, 3rd T20I, Stats Review: Suryakumar Yadav’s maiden ton, England’s highest T20I total against India, and other stats
England survive Suryakumar Yadav's blitz to avoid the clean sweep.
Suryakumar Yadav’s breathtaking maiden century went in vain as England defeated India by 17 runs in a high-scoring third and final T20I at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. With this victory, the hosts avoided a whitewash to lose the series by a 1-2 margin. Suryakumar struck 117 off just 55 which included 14 fours and six maximums but didn’t get any support from other batters with India finishing the chase on 198/9 in their pursuit of 216 runs target.
Talking about how the game unfolded, skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to bat first. Jason Roy and Buttler himself failed to contribute big for the third consecutive match as both got dismissed for 27 and 18 runs respectively. Dawid Malan looked in great touch as the left-handed batter smashed 77 off 39 with six fours and five sixes. Hard-hitter Liam Livingstone also came in dashing form as he remained unbeaten on 42 off 29 with the help of four maximums to take his side to a huge total of 215/7, England’s highest against India in T20 internationals.
Chasing 216, captain Rohit made only 11 while his opening partnership Rishabh Pant put in just a single run. Virat Kohli’s dry and lean spell extended as he got out for just 11 after hitting a four and a six. Shreyas Iyer managed to score 28 off 23 while Suryakumar kept going to keep India in the hunt. Dinesh Karthik and Ravindra Jadeja failed to make an impact as they got on six and seven runs respectively. The hosts kept their nerve and with Suryakumar’s wicket in their bag, they heaved a sigh of relief. For his match-winning spell of 3/22, Reece Topley won the Player of the Match award while Bhuvneshwar Kumar grabbed the Player of the Series trophy.
