England's Tymal Mills extends Sussex contract till 2019

England speedster Tymal Mills extended his contract with Sussex by two years, and will hence stay with the county until the end of 2019. The left-arm paceman is currently a T20 specialist because of his persistent back troubles. Mills was forced to cut short his maiden stint in the IPL due to injuries. He was able to offer his services to the Royal Challengers Bangalore for just 5 games.

Quite understandably, it’s been a tough time for him. He was the talk of the town after having been signed by RCB for Rs. 12 crores, 12 times his base price. However, Mills wasn’t able to live up to his tag during his short appearance for the Royal Challengers. He will nevertheless remain an exceptional bowler in the shortest format of the game, capable of bowling over 140 clicks on a regular basis. The Englishman also has a deceptive slower ball up his sleeve.

The fast bowler has travelled the world plying his skills for various domestic tournaments. He has played in the Bangladesh Premier League, New Zealand’s Super Smash, Australia’s Big Bash, the Pakistan Super League and the IPL. However, Sussex will bank on Mills’ experience through the next three seasons.

Delighted with the extension

“I am delighted to have signed an extension with Sussex through to 2019,” Mills said. “Ever since I’ve joined the club I’ve been welcomed with open arms and now fully regard Hove as my home. Even throughout all of my injuries when I first joined the club, the level of support I have received has been outstanding and I am looking to repay that support over the next three seasons,” the pacer added.

Mills was Sussex’ highest wicket-taker in the NatWest T20 Blast last year. Since his arrival from Essex in 2015, Sussex bowling coach Jon Lewis has worked closely with Mills.

“Tymal really has developed. He’s become a much more consistent bowler. When he first turned up at Sussex his lines and his lengths were unpredictable,” Lewis was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz.
“He would miss most of the time. He’s now physically in better shape which means he is more able to repeat technically. It’s down to how hard he’s worked. He’s changed his running style and technique in his run up which has led to his deliveries being in a more consistent area,” he added.
Keith Greenfield, Sussex’s Director of Cricket said, “We are looking to create an exciting and dynamic T20 team for years to come, and Tymal is an ‘X Factor’ cricketer who fits the bill in achieving that goal. There is no better sight for Sussex fans to see Tymal running down the hill at Hove, bowling quick and giving opposition batsmen a hard time.”Sussex will begin their NatWest Blast campaign on July 9, and Mills will be a key player for his side if they are to qualify from the group stages. All-rounder Luke Wright will lead the Sussex side, while South African David Wiese playing on a Kolpak deal will also feature in the team. With Mills leading the bowling, Sussex have plenty of aggression on offer in the upcoming tournament.
