Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler should issue an apology to Indians: BCCI official
It is speculated that the controversy surrounding Morgan and Buttler can also affect the image of their IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals respectively.
Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler can get in trouble as the England and Wales Cricket Board has received the screenshots where the two cricketers can be seen mocking Indians. What makes the matter worse for both Morgan and Buttler is that their historical tweets are just a couple of years old and came when the two were established cricketers.
It is speculated that the controversy surrounding Morgan and Buttler can also affect the image of their IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals respectively. A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official opened up on the whole matter saying that the English cricketers mocking Indians and earning from IPL won’t go down well for many players.
“KKR and RR will be in a fix as these are players earning from Indian Premier League and as late as 2017 were making fun of how Indians speak English. Now you can be dismissive of these posts but this also speaks about what their general perception about Indians is. It’s a tricky terrain but both KKR and Royals have a way out,” the senior BCCI official said as quoted by Times of India on conditions of anonymity.
A statement of apology from both Morgan and Buttler would suffice: BCCI Official
Further, the BCCI official also offered a solution saying that if KKR and RR are mindful of their brand image, then Buttler and Morgan need to issue a public apology. The official added that the franchises should also ban both the players from the remaining of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Suspending both the players won’t have repercussions and ECB has already denied sending England players to the remainder of IPL 2021 due to a packed international schedule. Also, KKR should have no problem in suspending Morgan as he has failed to produce any good results as a leader or a finisher.
“Firstly, if Shah Rukh Khan and Manoj Badale are mindful of their respective franchises’ image, a statement of apology from both Morgan and Buttler would suffice. Now with ECB not allowing them for the second phase of IPL due to their own commitments, the suspension would count for very little. You are suspending players who are not coming for the second phase. It will be mere posturing,” the official concluded.
