Fan asks if Virat Kohli should step down as India's ODI and Test captain, Virender Sehwag responds
Virat Kohli will step down as India's T20I captain after the T20 World Cup 2021.
India’s last league-stage game against Namibia in the T20 World Cup 2021 will mark Virat Kohli’s last game as India’s T20I captain. The talismanic batter, ahead of the tournament, had announced that he would step down from the leadership role after the conclusion of the global event. Although the Men in Blue endured a horrendous time in the global event, Kohli would like to end his stint as India’s T20I skipper on a winning note.
Although Virat had only announced about leaving T20I captaincy, many believe his leadership career in the other two formats isn’t certain as well. However, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag isn’t of the same opinion. Sehwag believes Kohli has done well while leading the national team and should continue captaining in the other two formats. The cricket legend expressed his views while answering a fan’s query.
I feel India are playing well under Virat Kohli’s captaincy: Virender Sehwag
The fan apparently asked whether Kohli should quit captaincy in the other two formats as well. In reply, Sehwag said there’s no need of Kohli to step down as captain in ODIs and Test matches.
“This is Virat’s decision but I don’t think he should leave the other two formats’ captaincy. If he wants to play just as a player, it is his decision. I feel India are playing well under his captaincy. His records as a captain are superb. It’s his personal decision whether he wants to continue as the ODI and Test captain or not,” Sehwag said on the latest episode of Virugiri Dot Com.
“According to me, he should lead India because he is a good player, a good captain who leads from the front,” the former Indian opener added. Although Sehwag wants Kohli to continue leading the national team, he also feels some introspection is needed as India haven’t won any ICC event since the 2013 Champions Trophy.
“I know we should support the team during bad times but it’s been a long time we haven’t won any major ICC tournament. India should definitely introspect on it. Winning bilateral series is one thing but people only remember you if you win world tournaments consistently,” asserted the two-time World Cup winner.
