Fans and players have the right to choose their favourites: Virender Sehwag

Over the last few days, a controversy surrounding Virat Kohli has been doing the rounds. In his recently launched application, the Delhi-born cricketer lashed out at a supporter, saying that the person should leave India if he doesn’t like his own countrymen. The supporter previously said that he doesn’t like seeing Virat and the Indians bat and rather prefers to see the Australian and English cricketers.

The comments from the 30-year-old batsman have drawn a severe amount of criticism, though a few people have stood beside him. In the meantime, Virender Sehwag, the former Indian cricketer from Delhi itself, mentioned that people have the right to express their opinions. Moreover, he also went on to say that he had earlier put forth sports personalities from other countries as his favourites.

Sehwag voices his opinion on Virat Kohli

“Everybody has the right to speak. We have also been asked who our favourite player is and I have taken names like Roger Federer, Brian Lara and Adam Gilchrist. Fans have the right to choose their favourite players and so do the players. Only the media blows up incidents like these and creates controversies,” Sehwag was quoted as saying in India Today.

The situation worsened to such an extent that an official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remarked that Kohli might have violated his central contract with the outrageous comments while asking him to respect the fans. The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), a two-member panel, is also set to delve deep into the matter.

After the commotion surrounding the controversy, Virat Kohli eventually broke his silence and tweeted about the issue a couple of days ago, saying that he believes in freedom of choice. As far as his cricketing career is concerned, he is on a break and is scheduled to be back in India’s three-match T20I series against Australia, which gets underway on November 21 at The Gabba in Brisbane.
