On December 6, the country woke up to the news of all the four accused of the brutal rape and murder of Disha being killed by the police after being allegedly attacking the police and trying to escape. All the four accused were in the age group of 20-24 and were lorry drivers, who were nabbed relatively soon after committing the heinous crime.

Every Indian citizen was in utter disbelief when the 26-year-old veterinarian was abducted by the four accused on November 26 and was taken to the culvert under the bypass in Shadnagar, where they took turns to assault her sexually and then burned her lifeless body to remove the evidence. However, the Cyberabad police nabbed Mohammed Arif, Naveen, Shiva and Chennakeshavulu soon and were remanded into judicial custody for 14 days.

On December 6, the police took them to the crime scene in order to do a re-enactment, but as per their reports, the accused attacked the police and snatched their weapons while running off. They were chased, warned and in the following encounter, were killed, in which two policemen were also injured.

Gautam Gambhir calls for review mercy petition

BJP MP and former India captain Gautam Gambhir has been vocal in his support for the Indian police and armed forces. He called for stringent measures to curb rapes all over the country and showed his support to the police over the encounter. If they (accused in veterinarian rape & murder case) were trying to escape, then I stand with police,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by timesnownews.com. He also called for reformation of the judicial system.

He also claimed that barbarians do not deserve any mercy in such extreme cases. He mentioned that the verdict of fast track courts should be final and any mercy petitions should be thoroughly reviewed. “Barbarians deserve no mercy. With all the earnestness at my command, I urge every citizen to support @rashtrapatibhvn and promote a review of mercy petitions. Once the death penalty is pronounced, rapists should be sent to the gallows right away and without any delay. #DeathtoRapists.” Gambhir tweeted.

Meanwhile, while many cheered the actions of the police force, some quarters of netizens were appalled by the lack of judicial process and questioned the motive of the officials as they seemed in hurry to provide justice. The victim’s family, on the other hand, was relieved as the accused got what they deserved. “It has been 10 days to the day my daughter died. I express my gratitude towards the police and government for this. My daughter’s soul must be at peace now,” the victim’s father said.
