Glenn Maxwell says he is not focusing on Test recall
Maxwell although has done decently for Australia in the limited-over series, he has not yet succeeded in making a name for himself in the longer format.
It was only last month that Australia’s batting all-rounder Glenn Maxwell said that he will let go the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) contract next year and work harder to get a recall in Australia’s Test side. Now, the hard-hitting left-hander has said that he isn’t expecting a recall into the Baggy Greens’ Test side anytime soon even though the hosts have struggled to negotiate with a strong Indian bowling attack in the ongoing Test series.
Australia are trailing 1-2 in the four-Test series at the moment and the primary reason for their hapless show has been the batters’ poor form. The 30-year-old Maxwell although has done decently for Australia in the limited-over series, he has not yet succeeded in making a name for himself in the longer format. In March, it will be six years since Maxwell made his Test debut against India but he played only seven games in this time scoring 339 runs at an average of 26.07 and hit only one hundred.
Wicket-wise, too, Maxwell’s exploits have been ordinary in Test cricket with just eight scalps so far. The Victoria batsman’s last Test came against Bangladesh in September 2017 and even though he has featured regularly in the ODIs and T20Is, his name hasn’t come up for consideration in the longer format even when Australia are going through a lean phase.
Selectors weren’t happy with my show in Tests
Maxwell, however, has an honest take on this. “They (selectors) think that I’ve got enough opportunities to have shown what I’ve got in the Test arena, and they weren’t happy with what they saw,” he was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
“Look, if I can pile some more runs on at the back end of this summer who knows, but, yeah, it’s too hard to concentrate on anything too far ahead. They’ve picked their squad at the moment and I wish them all the best. I’ll be watching – I love watching the game – so I’ll be still watching them.”
Australia picked another limited-overs specialist Aaron Finch for the Test series against India after he had a fair debut against Pakistan last October but a poor run saw him getting dropped for the fourth Test. Maxwell, who backed his Victoria mate as a Test player, felt the latter should get chances in the middle order.
