How does the World Test Championship table read after South Africa's point deduction?
The Faf du Plessis' men were fined 60% of their match fee as well for slow over-rate.
South Africa have become the first team to be docked World Test Championship (WTC) points for slow over-rate in addition to being fined 60% of their match fee after falling short of their target in the fourth Test against England in Johannesburg. The Proteas did not bowl any frontline spinner in the team and did not bowl a single over of spin in the game which played a big part in the slow over-rate.
The hosts were found guilty of being three overs short after time allowances were taken into consideration. The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Bruce Oxenford and Joel Wilson, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth official Allahdien Palekar.
“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised two points for each over short,” the ICC stated in a release.
South Africa captain Faf du Plessis pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction. Consequently, there was no need for a formal hearing following the levelling of the charge by the match officials. After the series, South Africa are now at a lowly seventh spot in the nine-team Test Championship. The Proteas have only 24 points after seven Tests. England, on the other hand, are third in the points table behind India and Australia.
England wrap up series in style
England ended the Test series in a stunning manner by dismantling the hosts by 191 runs. With the win, the visitors wrapped up the four-match series 3-1. England had started the series with a loss before bouncing back in style to win the remaining three games. Mark Wood was the star of the show in the final Test as he picked up nine wickets across two innings. Chasing 466, South Africa were all out for just 274.
