Ben Stokes is an integral part of the England team in all three formats of the game. His all-round skills provide much-needed balance to the team. But a recent video of him involved in a punch-up has put his chances of playing the Ashes in jeopardy. Former Australian captain Ian Chappell said that England stand no chance of winning the Ashes if they don’t have Stokes.

Suspended!

The Durham player, who is also the vice-captain of the Test team has been picked in the 16-member squad announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). But, he was suspended by the ECB after the video of the punch-up incident emerged.

While Stokes has been suspended till further investigations are conducted, Chappell has pointed out several reasons due to which England might find it difficult to replace him.

“Obviously his ability is the main thing, but also, he’s a match-winning player and those sort of players drag the rest along with them and make them better. Former Australian captain said as quoted by the Sydney’s Daily Telegraph

Stokes raises his game Vs top teams

The former Aussie cricketer further said that players like Stoke raise their game when the opposition is tough. He also mentioned that his ability to elevate his game in crunch situation rubs off on his teammates.

“He’s probably one of those players inspired by playing against the better teams and again that has a flow-on effect to the fellas that don’t have that sort of confidence,” Ian said.

He emphasized his point by saying that England has no chance in hell of winning the Ashes without the all-rounder. “I don’t think they’ve got a hope in hell without him.” He said

The five-match Ashes series is scheduled to begin on 23rd November with the first Test scheduled at Brisbane.
