ICC Champions Trophy might get postponed after Manchester Arena attacks

England is all set to host the eighth edition of the Champions Trophy for the second consecutive time. The ‘mini World Cup’ will commence from 1st of June. But before that, a horrifying incident has struck England. American pop singer Ariana Grande was performing at a concert in the Manchester Arena when suddenly suicide bombings took place.

According to reports, at least 22 people were killed which includes children as well. Moreover, more than 50 people are injured and a few are missing too. The incident was criticised by the cricketers all over the world. Ariana said that she was broken after the incident. Prime Minister of England Theresa May said that Britain will take necessary steps against those who were behind the incident.

Champions Trophy will have to wait

The British Parliament decided to close all public events immediately after the Manchester Arena attacks. As a consequence, all tours, events and banqueting will be cancelled with immediate effect. Manchester will not host any Champions Trophy match this year but is not far away from some of the venues. Especially, the venue for India‘s matches is pretty close to Manchester. Hence, the security threat is a concern for the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the horrific attack in Manchester. The ICC and ECB place safety and security at the ICC Champions Trophy and ICC Women’s World Cup this summer as the highest priority. We operate on advice from our Tournament Security Directorate – in conjunction with the ECB and relevant authorities – to ensure that we have a robust safety and security plan for both tournaments. We will continue to work with authorities over the coming hours and days and review our security in line with the threat levels,” mentioned ICC on its official website.
