Australia and England were involved in a thrilling Group B game where the quarter-final spot was up for grabs. Chasing 253 to win, the Australians were 153/2 at the end of 30 overs. They scored only 53 runs in next 94 balls and also lost six wickets. Connor Sully (35* off 20 balls) and Todd Murphy (16* off 10 balls) shared an unbeaten 47-run stand for the 9th wicket as the Aussies reached the target on the final ball.

In another game on Thursday, the Nigeria Under-19s were bowled out for 57 in reply to West Indies’ total of 303/8. The team from the Caribbean won the game by 246 runs and finished the group stage unbeaten.

All the statistical highlights from Australia and West Indies’ victories on Thursday:

1 – England has failed to finish in top four of a U19 CWC for the first time. Starting from 1998, England has made it to the final 8 in each of 11 editions where 16 teams were part of. The 1988 edition was of eight teams where England finished in top four. England’s previous lowest position in a U19 CWC is 8th in the 2010 edition. With England’s exit, now only India Under-19s and Pakistan Under-19s have finished in top 8 places in all the editions of the Under-19s World Cup.

3 – Australia recorded only the 3rd instance of a team achieving the target on the final ball of a match. The other two instances – Scotland chasing a 124-run target in 25 overs against Kenya, 2002 and New Zealand chasing a 238-run target against West Indies, 2012.

This is overall the 10th instance of a team reaching the target on the last ball of a Youth ODI and the first such occasions for Australia. England now has lost three Youth ODIs on the last ball when defending a total while no other team has lost more than twice.

6 – Australia now have defeated England on six occasions in the U19 CWC out of nine meetings. The English team won a couple over the Aussies in this tournament while another match ended in a washout.

Australia have won five or more games in the U19 CWC only against West Indies (7) and England. On the other hand, England have lost five or more games in the history of the tournament only against India (6) and Australia.

47* – The unbeaten 47-run stand between Connor Sully and Todd Murphy is now the highest partnership for 9th or lower wicket during a successful chase in U19 CWC. The previous highest is 44* by Denmark pair of B Hansen and J Larsen against Ireland in the 1998 edition. Overall, the Sully-Murphy partnership is the highest for 8th or a lower wicket in a successful Youth ODI chase.

57 – Nigeria’s total of 57/10 is now the lowest total by any side in Youth ODIs against West Indies. The previous lowest total against the West Indies is 59 by Papua New Guinea in the 1998 U19 CWC.

253 – Australia’s 253-run chase in this match is their first 250+ successful chase in a U19 CWC match. Their previous highest U19 CWC chase is 237 against South Africa in the 2002 edition.
